Open Peer Review System

This refers to the presentation of Prof. Khalid Khan at PAME conference related to Open Peer Review System published in Pulse International of November 15th 2024 issue.
I have reservations about adopting an open peer review system in Pakistan due to several challenges. These include a lack of adequately trained reviewers, generally low ethical standards in academic practices, and the absence of transparency in declaring conflicts of interest. Introducing open peer review under these circumstances may risk further compromising the integrity and quality of scholarly publications.
We have seasoned journal editors as our teachers and facilitators. They can share with us the experience of:

  1. How did they manage to gather the reviewers for their journals?
  2. How much do they trust the reviewers in the blinded and open peer review process?

Dr. Khalid,
Pakistan.

Congratulations to Prof. Khalid Khan. Thank you for your views on peer review. Having transparent peer review system is a great steps locally, regionally and internationally and should come with a strong advocacy and plan of implementation for this approach. In our faith and norms we are believers of transparency, equity and justice. It is time to walk the talk and lead the change through our daily practice like the five days prayers some of us have. Totally understand Dr. Khalid your concern. As EMAME members let us propose open peer review and have a transitional plan where we invest in increasing awareness on ethics of transparent, editorials and peer review. We can have transition period with intensified series of orientation on importance of ethics of transparency of peer review and whole publishing in general. Mr. Shakut Ali Jawaid and course faculty are in good position to lead with universities in Pakistan where Pakistan can become role model in our region and our world in five years.

Women Empowerment PAME and UHS

Dear Shaukat Ali Jawaid Sb,

I hope you and your family are in the best of health.
I am writing to express my sincere appreciation for the comprehensive article highlighting the achievements of women physicians in medical journalism and editing in Pakistan. As one of the academicians mentioned who received training through the UHS Certificate Courses in Medical Editing, I can personally attest to the tremendous impact this initiative has had on empowering women in academic medicine.

The collaborative efforts of PAME and UHS have created invaluable opportunities for women physicians/ academicians like myself to develop expertise in medical editing while accommodating our professional and personal responsibilities. I am particularly grateful to you.

I truly appreciate how you acknowledge and remember every person, no matter how big or small they are. May Allah always bless you. Ameen

Prof. Sundus Tariq

Post Conference Session at UOL

The post-PAME conference seminar held at the University of Lahore was a remarkable success, thanks to the intellectual contributions of all the participants, many of whom hold leadership positions across various medical journals in the country. Reflecting on the journey of the past three years, it is incredible to see how what once seemed like an ambitious dream has now become a reality.

While moderating the session alongside the esteemed panelists, I fully realized the significant role played by Mr. Shaukat Ali Jawaid, in shaping our success stories. His vision and dedication, through the editing course offered by UHS (which continues to this day), equipped us with the skills and knowledge to establish journals for our institutions and achieve indexing milestones.

The consistent guidance of facilitators like Prof. Akhtar Sherin, Prof. Jamshed Akhtar, Dr. Fatema Jawad, and Dr. Masood Jawaid has been instrumental, but at the heart of it all stands Mr. Shaukat Ali Jawaid—our mentor of mentors. His tireless efforts, wisdom, and encouragement have inspired and shaped us in ways words cannot fully express. We owe him our deepest gratitude for making this incredible journey possible. Thank you, Sir, for believing in us and guiding us every step of the way.

Prof. Mariyah Hidayat
University of Lahore.

Regulatory bodies should not encourage Paper Mills

Excellent narrative and suggestions to the regulatory authorities. Thumbs up.

Excellent suggestion of a joint committee of HEC and PMDC. HEC is clearly in need of two things. They need technical advices, for which PMDC Committee is the right authority. Secondly, they must resist political or otherwise pressures to give concessions and compromise on standards. A joint committee will give them cover for both.
