AI hallucinations can lead to incorrect answers
and unreliable references in generic LLMs
Session on Use of AI in Research by PharmEvo Research Forum at SIAG
KARACHI: A wide range of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools is now available to help improve English language, grammar and literature review. These tools can significantly save time, especially for healthcare professionals engaged in scientific writing and research. However, it’s important to use them intelligently and recognize that not all Large Language Models (LLMs) are designed for research purposes. AI tools can simplify complex information, but they also have limitations.

PharmEvo Research Forum organized a session of Use of AI in Research at the Sindh Institute of Advanced Endoscopy & Gastroenterology (SIAG) at Civil Hospital/Dow University of Health Sciences on Sunday, July 13, 2025. Group photograph taken on the occasion shows the participants photographed with Prof. Saad Khalid Niaz, Dr. Masood Jawaid Director Medical Affairs (Guest Speaker) and Mr. Shaukat Ali Jawaid Chairperson of PharmEvo Research Forum.
This was stated by Dr. Masood Jawaid, Director of Medical Affairs at PharmEvo Pharmaceuticals, Associate Editor of the Pakistan Journal of Medical Sciences, and a well-known medical educationist. He was speaking at a scientific session organized for faculty and postgraduate students of the Sindh Institute of Advanced Endoscopy & Gastroenterology (SIAG) at Civil Hospital/Dow University of Health Sciences on Sunday, July 13, 2025.
The event, sponsored by the PharmEvo Research Forum, was well attended by postgraduate students. Dr. Saad Khalid Niaz, who has been associated with SIAG in an honorary capacity for several years, also graced the occasion with his presence.
Dr. Masood Jawaid emphasized that ChatGPT is not recommended for scientific research, even though it can provide information quickly. However, the model is prone to errors—commonly referred to as AI hallucinations—which can lead to incorrect answers and questionable references.
He advised faculty members to use AI tools for topic selection, as a simple change in the prompt can generate numerous relevant suggestions. Still, healthcare professionals must be cautious about AI hallucinations and should learn prompt engineering to ensure accurate and credible results.
For scientific search, Semantic Scholar is a wonderful tool. TLDR provide concise summaries of entire manuscripts, while Rayyan AI is useful for conducting systematic reviews. He gave a practical demonstration of these tools and explained how to use them effectively for reading and understanding research articles. He particularly recommended SciSpace, calling it the most suitable tool for research, as it operates in collaboration with Semantic Scholar.
Concluding his session, Dr. Masood Jawaid encouraged faculty and postgraduate students to practice using these tools and learn how to leverage them effectively. He announced that a follow-up session would be held to explore advanced uses of AI tools in medical education and research.
In his closing remarks, Dr. Saad Khalid Niaz thanked Dr. Jawaid for his insightful knowledge and directed the unit to arrange subscriptions to Semantic Scholar and SciSpace, ensuring these valuable tools are available to the staff.
The Sindh Institute of Advanced Endoscopy and Gastroenterology (SIAG), located within Civil Hospital and affiliated with Dow University of Health Sciences, is a renowned center of excellence in the public healthcare sector. Over the years, it has trained a significant number of gastroenterologists and consistently performed a high volume of gastrointestinal procedures. Its results are on par with leading international centers.
Much of SIAG’s success is credited to Dr. Saad Khalid Niaz and Prof. Saeed Qureshi, who played a pivotal role in its development with the support of the Sindh Government and donations.
It is worth mentioning that Dr. Saad Khalid Niaz is a prominent and highly experienced gastroenterologist in Pakistan, known for his expertise in endoscopy and pancreatic therapies, with over three decades of clinical experience. In recognition of his contributions, the Government of Pakistan awarded him the Sitara-e-Imtiaz.
Earlier, Mr. Mateen Shaikh representing PharmEvo, introduced Dr. Masood Jawaid and briefly highlighted the academic services offered by PharmEvo Research Forum to healthcare professionals and institutions. Mr. Shaukat Ali Jawaid, Chairperson of the PharmEvo Research Forum, Mr. Abdus Samad, Commercial Director and Raza Husnain were also present on the occasion.
