KARACHI: Pakistan Association of Medical Editors (PAME) organized a workshop on use of Artificial Intelligence for medical editors at PMA House Karachi on September 28th 2023 which was attended by editors affiliated with medical journals published from Karachi. Dr. Masood Jawaid Associate Editor of Pakistan Journal of Medical Sciences was the facilitator. Artificial Intelligence, it was sated is simulation in human intelligence. There are numerous tools of AI which also includes Machine Learning and Deep Learning. Further improvements are still under progress but AI has its own limitations and what it tells may be wrong. Some basic information regarding use of Artificial Intelligence by the Editors was covered during the workshop just to sensitize them about the usefulness and its importance.

Artificial Intelligence is being increasingly used in Research these days. Now more than one hundred AI tools are available. Dr. Masood Jawaid described in detail what AI tools can be useful for the Editors and how one can use them. Semantic Scholar can be used for literature search. It uses all the key words as one sentence. One can put the research question and it will make the relevant PDF available. TLDR, he said stands for Too Long Didn’t Read which is AI generated summary of papers. Articles can be summarized by using different AI tools. One can ask for further details like Methods and Results. It can also show Tables and Figures.

Science Space is yet another AI tool for literature search which is freely available. It reads literature as a whole. It can also be used to suggest questions. Every time it will come up with new questions, it can also be used to ask related questions. It helps to find out what information is not available hence one can go forward. These literature review sites, Dr. Masood Jawaid remarked are more reliable as compared to ChatGPT. ChatGPT can also be used for brainstorming, identify areas for research and topics for writing. Using these AI tools students can be given topics for research. Those AI tools which are not connected with internet, their authenticity remains highly controversial. ChatGPT and other AI tools can be used for improvement of Grammar and professional writing. ChatGPT4 is connected with internet hence it is more authentic and accurate but it is not freely available. BARD is an AI tool developed by Google which is more reliable than ChatGPT 3.5. Scholarcy is a paid AI tool which can be used for review of manuscripts. Review Assistant is yet another AI tool. AI writing can now be detected by different software’s which are available. Different bodies of Editors including WAME as well as COPE have come up with guidelines on the use of AI which clearly state that ChatGPT cannot be listed as Author.
