Medicine as a profession offers respect, dignity and provides opportunities to serve the ailing humanity

We need to concentrate on research to find indigenous solutions to
our problems-Prof. M. Aslam Students should honestly concentrate
on studies and uphold profession ethics – Mian Muhammad Idrees

FAISALABAD: Medicine as a profession not only provides employment but offers respect, dignity besides providing opportunities to serve the ailing humanity. This was stated by Prof. Maj. Gen. Muhammad Aslam former Vice Chancellor of University of Health Sciences who is currently affiliated as an Advisor for postgraduate studies at Shifa Tameer-e-Millat University, Islamabad. He was speaking at the White Coat ceremony of the newly admitted students to the First Year class of Aziz Fatimah Medical & Dental College, Faisalabad. This institution which was established by Mian Muhammad Idrees an eminent industrialist and philanthropist is one of the fast progressing medical colleges in this industrial city of Pakistan. Prior to the establishment of this medical college, they have been successfully running a charitable Trust Hospital since many years which was an important addition to the tertiary healthcare facilities in this city.

Prof. Aslam further stated that the number of medical colleges in public sector were not enough to serve the ever increasing number of students who wish to join the medical profession. Hence establishment of medical and dental institutions in the private sector were not only supplementing government efforts to produce healthcare professionals but also providing job opportunities to medical teachers. Hence, the initiative to establish this intuition by Mian Idrees was commendable and deserve our appreciation. The next step is to give importance to research. The medical institutions are supposed to produce knowledge and every effort should be made to find indigenous cost effective solutions to our problems, he remarked. He appreciated the steps taken by Aziz Fatimah Medical College to improve the curriculum. Research is a very difficult, at times frustrating and long journey but it does determine the course of future development and progress, he remarked.
