Razi Lecture at Pathology Conference
KARACHI: Indus Hospital and Health Network is now running and managing thirteen hospitals which includes nine government hospitals and one hundred ten clinics all over Pakistan. The total bed strength of the hospital at Lahore will also be gradually increased to 1300-beds. This was sated by Prof.Abdul Bari Khan founder of Indus Hospital and Health Network. He was delivering the Razi Memorial Lecture at the 46th Internaitonal Conference of Pakistan Association of Pathologists in the inaugural session on Friday October 10th 2025. Prof. Khalid Masood Gondal President of College of Physiains & Surgeons Pakistan was the chief guest in this session.

Prof. Khalid Masood Gondal President CPSP along with Prof. Suhail Akhtar Chughtai presenting a Memento to Prof. Abdul Bari Khan the founder of Indus Hospital and Health Network at the 46th Pathology conference organized by PAP at Lahore recently. Prof. Bari was the guest speaker in the inaugural session.
The three days’ conference from October 10th to 12th was jointly organized by various societies related to pathology i.e. Pakistan Association of Pathology, Histopathology and Cytology Society of Pakistan, Pakistan Society of Hematology, Medical Microbiology and Infection Diseases Society of Pakistan, Pakistan Society of Chemical Pathologists and Pakistan Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology. It attracted a large number of members affiliated with these organizations.
In his address Prof.Abdul Bari Khan shared the success story of Indus Hospital and Health Network. It was an inspiring and motivational speech which showed that if one is sincere, honest and committed, everything is possible and with Allah Pak’s blessing one can do wonders. Provision of free health care at all these healthcare facilities is not less than a miracle. Whatever I have achieved, Prof. Bari said was because of blessings of my parents and teachers. I come from a religious family from Peshawar and my father always prayed and wanted me to become doctor who can serve the ailing humanity. I came to Karachi 1956. I got admission in Dow Medical College in 1979. Conditions of Civil Hospital affiliated with DMC was very pathetic and every admitted patient had a story to tell. There were no bed sheets and sometimes more than one patient had to be accommodated on one bed. We the four students formed the Patients Welfare Association.
In 1980s professional blood donors used to donate blood more than once every week. It was not a heathy blood and also carried lot of infections. Once these blood donors went on strike in 1982 to force increase in their charges which proved a blessing in disguise. We created awareness and promoted the concept of voluntary blood donation which proved a great success. In 1984 we also started administering blood products and its different components. I graduated in 1986, some of my colleagues went abroad for postgraduate studies but I remained in Pakistan. Emergency Wad at Civil Hospital was in a very bad shape. We decided to construct new Emergency through donations and collected thirty-six lac rupees of which twenty-four lac was contributed by children. Hence we were able to build a new Emergency and PWD did create lot of problems for us. My father was suffering from paraplegia. I joined NICVD for training in cardiac surgery and did FCPS in 1995. I was appointed Assistant Professor of Cardiology at DMC and decided to build the cardiology ward. I collected ten crore rupees in donation and established the most modern cardiac surgery unit at CHK.

Some participants of the Pathology conference held at Lahore photographed with Prof. Mahmood Ayaz VC KEMU who was the chief guest in the concluding session along with some office bearers of PAP and some distinguished guests.
It was in 2004 that we contacted Dr. Kazi from Abu Dhabi who had established Islamic Masson Hospital in Korangi and was finding it difficult to run and manage it. This hospital was located on an area of twenty acres of land. After successful negotiations, we took control of this facility and started renovation and expansion. In 2005, this hospital started functioning. My wife graduated from Khyber Medical College. My monthly salary as Assistant Professor was three thousand rupees. I had many lucrative offers form Saudi Arabia and could have made lot of money but decided to stay in Pakistan. My wife supported me and is now working at Indus Hospital Health Networks as Chief of Clinical Operations. She is with me and not behind me, he remarked.
My friends Dr, Amin an orthopedic Surgeon, Dr. Zafar Zaidi Urologist, and Aziz Anesthetist also returned home and we started working as a team. Indus Hospital is also being expanded and numerus other institutions are being added to the health network. College of Nursing, Pharmacy have started functioning. We plan to establish a medical and dental college and eventually make it a University. I am hopeful that with the help of friends, well-wishers, donors and philanthropists who are helping us, we will succeed in our mission, he added.
Prof. Khalid Masood Gondal in his speech congratulated the organizers for inviting Prof.Abdul Bari Khan as Guest of Honour to deliver Razi Memorial Lecture. He also traced the history of CPSP. This institution, he said, has so far trained over forty thousand FCPS and over twenty thousand MCPS in different disciplines. We have fourteen Regional Centers and three sub-centers. We have collaboration with Royal Colleges of UK and Royal College of Ireland. Currently seven hundred forty Residents are getting training in UK and after two years training they all have to come back as per agreement. Hence this is not brain drain but brain gain. He also disclosed that they plan to establish an Artificial Intelligence Centre at CPSP.
Later a number of eminent pathologists were presented Life Time Achievement Awards. Those honoured included Prof. Suhail Akhtar Chughtai, Prof Shahid Pervez, Maj. Gen. Suhaib Ahmed, Maj.Gen. Amir Ikram, Dr. Naila Keyani and Dr. Nisar Ahmad. Bukhari Gold Medal was also presented to one of the young brilliant Pathologist.

Prof. Mahmood Ayaz Vice Chancellor of KEMU was the chief guest in the concluding session of 46th Pathology conference organized by PAP at Lahore. Photograph taken on the occasion shows him with Prof. Suhail Akhtar Chughtai, Prof. Mulazim Bukhari President PAP and other distinguished participants.
Earlier Prof. Mulazim Hussain Bukhari President of Pakistan Association of Pathologists in his welcome address stated that the theme of this 46th Internaitonal conference of Pathology was “Innovations in Pathology: Bridging Science, Technology, and Patient Care in the age of Artificial Intelligence”. About fourteen hundred delegates have registered for this conference. We have forty pre conference sessions hosted by various medical institutions all over the country. PAP was established in 60s and became more functional in 1977 after a meeting held at AFIP and the founders included Lt. Gen. Syed Azhar Ahmad, Dr Mansoor Dar and others. Its history has now been compiled. The present conference is a team work. He also requested the CPSP President to start Fellowship in Oral Pathology and Derma Pathology. Previously there used to be four professors in the Dept. of Pathology in different sub-specialties but now PM&DC has notified that only one Professor of Pathology is enough in a medical college which was a great injustice. This decision needs to be reversed.
The organizes deserve to be commended for Honouring Prof. Abdul Bari Khan by inviting him as Guest of Honour to deliver Razi Memorial Lecture. Yet another unique feature was joint conference by various societies and associates related to pathology which promoted the concept of collaboration and cooperation within the profession. There was a few joint Plenary and key Note Lectures while most of the affiliated societies and associates also had their own separate programs and sessions were devoted to important topics.
Prof. Mahmood Ayaz Vice Chancellor of King Edward Medical University was the chief guest in the concluding session on Sunday October 12th2025. Pathology, he said, is the backbone of all specialties. It bridges the gap between science and patient care. It is helpful in making correct diagnosis, monitoring treatment plan and monitoring treatment outcome. Pathology has made tremendous progress. It is helpful in molecular diagnostics; Bio Labs are now functioning. It is helpful in genome sequencing; genomics centers are being established. I am glad to note that so many organizations are collaborating in this conference. In fact, collaboration is the key to progress and development, getting excellence in medical education, it is all because of multidisciplinary collaboration and co-operation. He also pointed out that whatever position he had achieved today was because of the blessings of his parents and teachers. Fateha was also offered for the mother of Prof. Mahmood Ayaz who passed away recently.
Earlier the organizers pointed out that the conference attracted delegates from fifteen countries. We had twenty-six Internaitonal and over one hundred national speakers.
