Pre-symposium Workshops at Symposium on AI at JMDC
KARACHI: Eleven Pre-symposium Workshops were organized at different places by Jinnah Medical & Dental College in collaboration with Sohail University last month. Prof. Zeelaf Shahid Director of Medical Education at JMDC was the chief organizer of this academic activity who along with her team had made elaborate arrangements for the meeting which attracted facilitators and speakers from many institutions from Pakistan and a few speakers from overseas as well.

She herself along with Mr. Bilal Ashraf facilitated the workshop on “Empowering Artificial Intelligence- Shaping the future for an impactful learning experience”. This session focused on how Artificial Intelligence is revolutionizing education, enhancing student engagement, and transforming traditional learning models into future-ready ecosystems. Students and faculty actively participated gaining into practical applications of AI in academics and beyond.

Dr. Sobia Ali and Dr. Yusra Nasir facilitated the workshop on “Developing AI -Drien E-Portfolios”. This engaging session explored how AI-powered e-Portfolios can enhance academic and professional growth by personalizing learning journeys, showcasing skills, and streamlining student assessment. Both students and faculty gained valuable insights into leveraging AI to create impact digital portfolio for the future.

Dr. Noman Islam was the facilitator for the workshop “Practical AI Techniques for healthcare imaging: Advancing clinical diagnostics with computer vision.” The topic of workshop facilitated by Prof. Adnan Kanpur Wala was “Leveraging AI for Innovation in Teaching and Assessment: Practical Approaches for Healthcare Faculty.” Dr. Nazish Jaffer facilitated the workshop on “Harnessing Health Through AI: An Introduction to Medial Image Analysis.” Prof. Shams Nadeem Alam from Baqai Medical University was the facilitator at workshop entitled “Artificial Intelligence: Tools in academic research; Enhancing productivity and Integrity.”
Prof. Rehan Ahmad Khan from Riphah International University Islamabad facilitated workshops on “Smarter Assessment; Unlocking AI Potential in Health Profession Education”. Dr. Husnain from Malaysia facilitated a workshop on AI-Driven Immersive Learning: Transforming Healthcare with Virtual Scenarios.

Four workshops were arranged for Medical Dental, Pharmacy, Diploma in Physiotherapy and Nursing Students as well.
Guest speakers from Pakistan and overseas in their Key Note lectures and in the Plenary sessions reported in our last issue in detail highlighted various important issues related to Academics, Research, Diagnostics, Treatment and Ethical implications.

Speaking in the concluding session Prof. Zeelaf Shahid thanked all the guest speakers, facilitators of different workshops and the participants for making these workshops and symposium a success. She also requested the participants to ponder upon the fact that although Artificial Intelligence has made tremendous contributors in almost all fields i.e. medical education, research, teaching etc., but we must keep in mind its draw backs as well as carbon ChatGPT alone emits. Hence it is extremely important to raise this concern globally from every platform and efforts should be made to find solutions for the increase carbon emission and energy consumption leading to highly threatening global warming ahead, she added.
