The ambitious project will cost Rs.109 Billion and will have many institutions including Cardiac Institute, Children Hospital, Medical College and Medical University
New facilities planned in South Punjab and other Districts of Province
LAHORE: Establishing a Medical District which is being termed as a new Flagship of Government of Punjab for which an amount of Rs. 109 billion has been allocated in the provincial budget is an important salient feature of the Punjab Budget announced on June 16th 2025. This amount will be used for acquisition of land and establishment of the Medical District.
According to reports this mega project will house seven major health schemes. It includes construction of another Children Hospital, Institute of Genetic Blood Diseases, Institute of Surgical Orthopedic and Medical Rehabilitation, Specialized Medical Hospital and Medical College, a thousand bed Cardiac Institute besides a medical university in addition to a state-of-the-art Diagnostic Lab and Center of Excellence for Nursing Education.
Provincial government has allocated Rs. 631 billion for the health sector in the fiscal year 2025-26 which also includes Rs. 450Bn for non-development and Rs.181Bn for development. In order to provide free medicines to patients in all public hospitals an amount of Rs. 79.5Bn has been allocated.
An amount of Rs.25Bn has been allocated for Universal Health Insurance programme and Rs. 14.5Bn for the establishment of Nawaz Sharif Institute of Cancer Treatment & Research Centre in Lahore. The budget document also show allocation of Rs. 2.6Bn for the establishment of Nawaz Sharif Institute of Cardiology at Sargodha. In order to enhance the scope of nursing education, centers of excellence are being established at Lahore, Rawalpindi and Multan. Burn units will be established at Bahawalpur and Rahim Yar Khan at a cost of four billion rupees. It is expected to ease burden on Burns Unit at Nishtar Hospital Multan but also help the patients and their attendants who at present have to travel to Multan for treatment.
The Government also intends to establish a public teaching hospital at Sialkot at a cost of Rs.7Bn and Children Hospital in Rawalpindi at a cost of Rs. 8.5Bn. A new mega health scheme named as Chief Minister’s Pediatric Heart Surgery Programme is also being launched. Under this initiative about four thousand three hundred children had undergone surgical procedures during the Year 2024. This programme had immense response hence the government allocated Rs. 3.6 Bn to further extend the scope of healthcare for the children who are diagnosed with multiple cardiac problems. The provincial budget also has allocations of Rs.3.6Bn for the Chief Minister’s Special Initiative Transport programme and Rs. 8.7Bn for the Dialysis programme. Rs. Three billion have also been allocated for the establishment of a Cath Lab. The budget documents also have an allocation of Rs. 9Bn for the Maryam Nawaz Health Clinics Programme while Rs. 20Bn has been earmarked for the upgradation of Basic Health Units.
