DUHS Launches 6-Month Certificate Course in Diabetes Education to Combat Rising Diabetes Burden

KARACHI: In a major step towards strengthening diabetes care in Pakistan, the Academic Council of Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS) has approved a six-month Certificate Course in Diabetes Education (CDE). This initiative comes in response to the alarming rise in the prevalence of diabetes in the country, which demands a more structured and multidisciplinary approach to care.

The newly approved program aims to equip healthcare professionals, especially diabetes educators and dietitians, with the essential knowledge and skills required for effective diabetes management. The course will focus on key areas such as patient education, lifestyle modification, medication adherence, glucose monitoring, and complication prevention — all vital components for improving outcomes in people living with diabetes.
Effective diabetes management goes beyond medical treatment alone. It requires the combined efforts of doctors, diabetes educators, dietitians, and other allied health professionals. This certificate program will play a crucial role in training a workforce capable of providing holistic and patient-centered care.

Dr. Musarrat Riaz, Director of the National Institute of Diabetes and Endocrinology (NIDE), DUHS, emphasized the importance of diabetes education in addressing the epidemic. “Empowering educators and dietitians through formal training programs like the CDE course is the need of the hour. A well-informed team approach can significantly reduce the burden of diabetes-related complications,” she stated.

With this initiative, DUHS reaffirms its commitment to advancing diabetes education and care across Pakistan. The course is expected to commence later this year, with enrollment details to be announced soon. (PR)
