We have tried to maintain and continued progress for which all the Presidents and previous council members need to be commended-Khalid Masood Gondal

KARACHI: Speaking at the 56th Convocation of College of Physicians & Surgeons Pakistan, Chief Minister Sindh Justice (Retd) Maqbool Baqar commended the standards of postgraduate medical education by CPSP and appreciated its administrative autonomy. However, he advised that social responsibility should also be included as a fundamental aspect. Safety and efficacy of the output more so for medical institutions was extremely important so that the graduates apply their knowledge with empathy to those who need it.

He also appreciated the achievements and accomplishments of the CPSP ever since its establishment. Later he presented Gold Medals to the highest achievers in three disciplines. Dr. Saadina earned Gold Medal in Pulmonary Medicine with 75% marks, Dr. Fatema Husain got Gold Medal in General Surgery with 71% marks and Dr. Saqib Raza Khan received Gold Medal in Medical Oncology with 84% marks.

Earlier Prof. Masood Hameed Khan former Vice Chancellor of Dow University of Health Sciences who was the Guest of Honor on this occasion paid tributes to all the former Presidents of College of Physicians & Surgeons of Pakistan and the council members for their devotion and dedication. His advice to the fresh graduates was to respect their parents, their teachers and work for their institutions and the country. Make sure that you have made some positive contribution for your institutions and the country. While treating the patients, do no harm at least. He also advised them not to ignore their own health and the health of their family members, get your annual medical checkup because healthy doctors can treat patients much better. Finally make sure to share your knowledge and wealth before you leave this world, he remarked.

Prof. Khalid Masood Gondal President CPSP in his presidential address traced the history of the establishment of CPSP in 1962 and appreciated the vision of its founder Lt. Gen. W. A. Burki. He also paid rich tributes to all the former Presidents for their contributions in the development of this great institution which enjoys international reputation and recognition. At present CPSP, he said, has 36,594 Fellows, 12,576 with MCPS degrees. We have eighty six Fellowship programmes in different disciplines. CPSP has so far produced 49,170 specialists who are serving in many countries of the world besides all over Pakistan.

He also referred to the training programme initiated in collaboration with Royal Colleges in UK and pointed out that so far five hundred sixty seven Pakistani doctors have been trained in thirteen disciplines and all of them return back to Pakistan after completion of two years training. CPSP organized its Convocation in UK on September 9th 2023 where seventy fellows were awarded Fellowship and it was also self-financed. We make sure to train caring considerate fellows and have strived to ensure competency based medical education. CPSP is a democratic institution, holds its elections regularly after every four years and have never compromised on standards and quality. Maintaining and continuous progress in different fields is not an easy task for which members of the councils deserve our appreciation, he remarked. His advice to the Fellows was to practice ethical medicine in their professional life. Later Fellows and those who had earned MCPS in different disciplines were awarded Diplomas.
