President of Pakistan Hypertension League Prof. Nawaz Lashari in his speech discussed the risk factors for hypertension and particularly highlighted the low tolerance level in the society, our attitudes and behavior which further increase blood pressure. Drugs are very costly which a vast majority of our patients cannot afford with the result that there are serious issues with therapeutic compliance.

Prof. M. Ishaq in his address stated that anything which is started with love never dies that is why Pakistan Hypertension League is flourishing and remains an academically active professional specialty organization ever since its inception. He thanked the pharma industry for their support stating that without their help and assistance they cannot organize such academic activities. However, our request to them is to keep the prices low which should be affordable for the patients. The National Pharmaceutical industry has done a commendable job by making available all the latest molecules and they are meeting the national requirements by producing quality drugs. Blood pressure control remains an issue for which we need the support of media, society, government to create awareness to control hypertension. Health cover should not be a class related service.
Primary healthcare should be accessible to the entire population. Our society needs to change its attitude. Hypertension with it brings many other diseases like PAD, diabetes co-existing with hypertension is a slow poisoning. He made a passionate appeal that let us avoid stress, take care of the known risk factors, use healthy diet, ensure regular exercise, timely identification, screening of the population and adherence to drug therapy will help improve the situation, he remarked.

Pakistan Hypertension League Multan Chapter organized an awareness walk on World Heart Day. Photograph shows some of the participants of the walk which was led by Prof. Kashif Hashmi and Prof. Nawaz Lashari.
The conference was eventful in many respects. First of all, it was held at an academic institution instead of a hotel which must be commended and appreciated. The organizing committee led by Prof. Tariq Abbas and Prof. Kashif Hashmi had made excellent arrangements for the meeting. Audiovisual arrangements were superb, overall hospitality was remarkable and most importantly the attendance in scientific session was very encouraging. Above all the organizes did not make money on hotel rooms which is most often witnessed at medical conferences and the pharma industry was allowed to arrange the accommodation for their invited guests at their own. The conference dinner was very well attended where the guests were presented Ajrak and gifts.
It must be mentioned here that it was Prof.Kashif Hashmi who had taken the initiative to organize the PHL conference in Multan. When he was transferred from CPE Institute of Cardiology to Nishtar Medical University, he offered the Chairmanship of the organizing committee to Prof. Tariq Abbas and also asked the CPE Institute of Cardiology to organize the conference. Prof. Tariq Abbas reciprocated this gesture by helping Prof. Kashif Hashmi to be unanimously elected as new President of Pakistan Hypertension League. This was a remarkable cooperation, coordination, respect for each other which needs to be commended which is seldom seen in the professional specialty organizations.
Withdrawal by Prof. Abid Amin from the contest for the post of President PHL in favours of Prof.Kashif Hashmi was also welcomed which earned him lot of respect from the members of PHL. There was voting for the post of General Secretary while other office bearers were also elected unanimously. During the General Body meeting some concerns were raised about the audited accounts at which the PHL executives promised to look into it and make the necessary corrections. Prof. Kashif Hashmi also organized an Awareness Walk on World Heart Day on Sunday October 29th which was participated by a large number of healthcare professionals, office bearers of PHL and representatives from the Pharma industry. Further reports based on different presentations in various scientific sessions to follow.
