KARACHI: The National Institute of Diabetes and Endocrinology (NIDE), Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS) organized a series of workshops related to diabetes management recently. These workshops were attended by a diverse audience, including faculty members, postgraduate trainees, students, dieticians, diabetes educators, and nursing staff.

The first workshop, titled “Insulin and Injectable Therapies in Diabetes Management,” was conducted, in collaboration with the National Association of Diabetes Educators of Pakistan (NADEP), on November 20, 2024.
The workshop featured a series of comprehensive and interactive presentations. Dr. Musarrat Riaz, Head of department at NIDE, discussed different types of insulin and other injectable therapies for diabetes management. Special emphasis was given to those agents which were available in Pakistan. Dr. Syed Muhammad Hassan, assistant professor at NIDE, conducted an engaging presentation on GLP-1 analogues, highlighting their role in diabetes care.
This was followed by a practical session on insulin injection techniques, including a live demonstration by Ms. Erum Ghafoor, Consultant Diabetes educator and president of NADEP. Latest technologies like Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) systems and insulin pumps were also demonstrated.

The session concluded with three interactive case-based scenarios focused on insulin dose titration, facilitated by Dr. Sabiha Banu, Dr. Nida Shakeel, and Dr. Faryal Tariq. These scenarios provided participants with hands-on experience and practical insights into insulin management strategies.
The second workshop in the series, focusing on Hyperglycemia in Pregnancy was conducted in collaboration with the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics DUHS. The workshop featured engaging and informative presentations by experts in the field. Dr. Uzma Nusrat, Associate Professor of Gynecology and Obstetrics, delivered a detailed presentation on the screening and diagnosis of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). Dr. Musarrat Riaz in her presentation discussed management strategies for diabetes during pregnancy. All these presentations highlighted the role of multidisciplinary approach involving diabetologist, gynecologist, dietitian, diabetes educator as well as nursing staff in managing these women. Universal screening for hyperglycemia in pregnancy as per national and regional guidelines were emphasized with initiation of timely management in order to prevent fetal, maternal and neonatal complications.
Ms. Tehmina Rashid, clinical dietician at NIDE, provided a comprehensive overview of medical nutritional therapy (MNT) in pregnancy, emphasizing its critical role in managing hyperglycemia. Various myths and misconceptions related to diet were also addressed.
The presentations were complemented by three interactive case scenarios about the screening and management of diabetes in pregnancy. These sessions were facilitated by Dr. Sabiha Banu and Dr. Faryal Tariq, faculty members of NIDE, alongside Dr. Uzma Nusrat from the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics.
This workshop underscored the importance of multidisciplinary collaboration and practical training in improving the outcomes of hyperglycemia in pregnancy, equipping healthcare professionals with evidence-based strategies for effective management.
