Advancing Medical Education and Collaboration for a Healthier Future

53rd QAMC Alumni Meeting

BAHAWALPUR: The 53rd QAMC Alumni Meeting was held with here on 12th October 2024, which was chaired by Dr. Khalid Iqbal and Prof. Sofia Farrukh Principal of the college. It was attended by many eminent graduates of the institution.

During the CME programme, Prof. Abubskar Siddique in his presentation talked about osteoporosis and its impact, and how to be better prepared for old age. Dr Zahid Imran discussed about wrong prescriptions, dispensing and distribution especially in an impoverished society like Pakistan. He opined that it was almost our religious duty to be cognizant of our patients’ financial status and take it into consideration when writing and dispensing drugs. Economically priced but effective alternative medicine should be preferred. Prof Sofia Farrukh spoke eloquently about college progress and future planning and invited for upcoming Alumni meeting in December besides visiting the institution whenever possible. Social Event in the evening was very serene and pleasant. Sohail Mukhtar did a wonderful job with the choice of musicians and food was superb.

On the second day Dr. Abol Fazal Ali Khan’s spoke on Bariatric and Metabolic surgery. He discussed how these surgeries help obese individuals lose weight and improve health issues like diabetes, mentioning types such as gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy, while noting the associated risks and the need for lifestyle changes. Dr. Naveed Bari discussed the problems of mechanical ventilation, highlighting issues like pneumonia, barotrauma, and sedation effects, emphasizing the importance of proper management to reduce risks.
Prof. Muneer Azhar discussed what not to do after 40, pointing out health issues like chronic diseases and mental health challenges. He stressed the importance of avoiding a sedentary lifestyle, poor diet, and excessive stress, advocating for positive lifestyle choices. Prof. Sofia Farrukh then provided an overview of corneal transplants at BVH, noting that since 2017, 442 transplants have been performed, with five performed every month.

She explained the procedure’s benefits and the importance of careful matching and post-operative care. She also discussed up gradation of BVH wards and operating theaters. She pointed out that a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed with Sri Lanka on March 11, 2023.This collaboration resulted in the generous donation of 15 corneas by Sri Lanka to date, fostering international cooperation in healthcare. This accomplishments in corneal transplantation and impactful collaboration with Sri Lanka, highlighted her expertise and dedication in advancing ophthalmological care. Finally, Prof. Saquib Sidduque presented on IVH, followed by Prof. Rashid Zia’s presentation on vertigo. This was followed by concluding remarks by Prof. Arif Zaidi and Dr Khalid Aftab. (PR)
