Neurosurgery Unit-II established at LUMHS
HYDERABAD: Department of Neurosurgery Unit-II at Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences (LUMHS), Jamshoro, hosted a one-day seminar on “Current Trends in Neurosurgery” at the IT Department in Jamshoro on 16 October 2024. The event was very well attended by participants from various medical institutions across Sindh, including Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) Karachi, Civil Hospital Karachi, Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, Civil Hospitals in Larkana, Nawabshah, and Sukkur, as well as Gambat Institute.
Over two dozen research papers were presented, covering critical topics such as brain tumors, traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, advanced radiation therapies, and stroke management. The presentations were followed by lively discussions. This seminar underscored the importance of continued education and collaboration in medicine, especially in regions like Sindh, where access to cutting-edge medical knowledge is crucial for improving healthcare outcomes.

This second unit was established a year ago by the Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Ikram Din Ujjan. The surgical team consists of Prof. Dr. Muhammad Hamid Ali, Dr. Vash Dev Khemani, Dr. Mubarak Hussain, and Dr. Aurangzeb Kalhoro.
The unit is also performing many elective surgeries, particularly those involving advanced brain and spine procedures. These efforts have not only improved patient care but also reduced the strain on hospital resources by shortening hospital stays and optimizing patient management. The unit also oversees a specialized ICU for head trauma and elective surgery patients, offering continuous monitoring and care to those in critical condition. With limited resources, LUMHS and its hospital have made significant strides in providing high-quality neurosurgical services to the people of Sindh and beyond. The initiative is a testament to the university’s commitment to medical excellence, showcasing its capacity to address pressing healthcare needs while supporting the professional development of its faculty and students.
