PESHAWAR: Medical Teaching Institute, Lady Reading Hospital, Peshawar is the largest hospital in the province. It has a history of providing medical aid to thousands of patients of bomb blasts and other incidents in the war on terror. Lady Reading Hospital being the teaching hospital for postgraduate residents, has produced legends in the field of medicine.
It is still one of the largest hospitals in terms of number of postgraduate residents. Currently, there are about 1100 residents in 34 different specialties ranging from diploma to MCPS to FCPS and second Fellowships of CPSP, Pakistan.

As per government policy, twice a year induction of residents takes place in the months of January and July through PGMI, Peshawar. This January, about 300 residents were inducted into Lady Reading Hospital in various specialties.
This time it was decided by the Deanery to arrange a comprehensive orientation session, the first of its kind in a public sector hospital for postgraduate residents. The orientation ranges from BLS equivalent workshops to general orientation about research, ethics, professionalism, and many other initiatives of the hospital for the residents.
The orientation session was divided into two stages for the ease of the trainees. In the first stage, a BLS equivalent CME accredited workshop was arranged for the fresh residents at the Department of Accident and Emergency. It was a 2-day workshop with hands-on activities under the supervision of facilitators from the Emergency Medicine Department. The Basics of resuscitation were taught and hands-on practices were carried out at stations designed for Airway management, Breathing components of resuscitation, Exposure, Circulation and splinting of long bone fractures, and Hands-on CPR. Lectures were also delivered on triaging, monitor application to critical patients, and how to perform and interpret ECG in critically ill patients.
The experienced team of facilitators included Dr. Hamid Shahzad Director Emergency, Dr. Shah Hussain, Dr. Rafi Ullah, Dr. Zeeshan Muhammad, Dr. Tariq Hayat, Dr. Muddasir Majeed, Dr. Muhammad Faisal Khan, and Dr. Jamal Bahadar and supported by Dr. Hisham Khalid Manager Emergency, Mr. Imran, Mr. Muhammad Junaid and Mr. Rahat.
In the second stage, a brief presentation was given to the newly inducted residents regarding different departments by the concerned heads. The role of the Deanery was explained by Dr. Muhammad Faisal Khan Associate Dean PGME, Dr. Zafar Iqbal Associate Dean UGME and Dr. Imran Bukhari Associate Dean Research.
The briefing covered important policies and procedures, such as academic planning, research activities, Institutional discipline, training rules and objectives, functions of each component of the Deanery and its impact on standard of training. The PGMI policy was briefed by the CEO PGMI Prof. Dr. Sahibzada Mahmood Noor and the CPSP policy was elaborated by the Regional Director CPSP Prof. Dr. Waqar Alam Jan.
Prof. Dr. Zahid Nazar delivered a comprehensive lecture on importance of communication skills and the integration of ethics and professionalism into practice. Being the front-line cadre for the patient care the basics of communication skills were also emphasized upon.
Selecting of Research Topic and Research Design is one of the most important step during the training. Prof. Dr. Gulrukh Qazi clarified in detail how to select a research topic, and how to proceed with research, and basic research-related modules and methods were explained.
Mr. Sahibzada Waqar, secretory Infection prevention and control committee LRH guided the participants about infection control and how to break the chain of infection. The importance to know about needle stick injury and how to prevent and its management is of utmost importance for the health care providers.
MTI, LRH has been transformed to a paperless model after the promulgation of MTI Reforms Act. The entire patient management and hospital HR associated matters have been shifted from paper to HMIS and HRMIS. Mr. Abid Durrani presented in detail the efficient use of technology and HRMIS software for the better management of patient care and to maintain personal files in HRMIS.
Dr. Zafar Mahmood delivered a lecture on Clinical Audit Cycle and the role of quality control department as well as the ongoing audits in various departments. Dr. Abdul Baseer highlighted the importance of documentation and its use in research, ethical and medico legal matters. The mortality & morbidity meetings at departmental and institutional level were also highlighted.
Radiology input is crucial in every specialty to diagnose diseases. Dr. Shams Ullah Burki, Interventional Radiologist, enlightened the importance of judicious use of radiology investigations and guided the new residents on properly utilizing radiology resources efficiently.
One of the most important roles of the institution is to enhance and develop the residents’ skills and knowledge with the new modifications and technologies. Multidisciplinary Team meetings (MDTs) are one of the most important ways to improve patient care, enhance critical thinking, promote problem solving attitude and to identify the areas where different disciplines need to collaborate for the desired outcomes. Prof. Dr. Tahira Nishtar is the lead person to successfully implement MDT meetings in LRH-MTI. The input from the trainees expected in these MDT meetings and to incorporate these meetings in their clinical training was the key point of her presentation.
Medical Director Dr. Hamid Shahzad highlighted the clinical obligation expected from the residents. Hospital director Brig R Dr. Muhammad Abrar Khattak outlined the general policies of the institute and to maintain the ethical dress code.
Dean/CEO Prof. Dr. Junaid Sarfaraz Khan thanked all participants and briefly outlined the future plans of the Deanery. He stressed on the use of emotional intelligence in practice, good communication skills at all levels and to use their time to the fullest for training and academic excellence remembering to uphold the highest levels of medical professionalism during duties at LRH-MTI as TMOs. He thanked the facilitators for a very well conducted Orientation session. Chairman Board of Governors MTI, LRH Prof. Dr. Muhammad Zubair Khan was the Chief Guest at the closing ceremony and distributed the shields among the participants. (PR)
