PESHAWAR: This three days’ workshop on National Guidelines on Small and Sick Newborn Care was organized by PPA-KP, PPA- Neonatology group, along with UNICEF and Directorate MNCH KP 11th to 13th January 2024 at a local hotel. The activity started with a brief inaugural, where President PPA- KP Prof. Mohammad Hussain and Central President Neonatology Prof. Khwaja Irfan Waheed highlighted the importance and necessity of this workshop. There were six facilitators, for the workshop which included the following:

2. Prof. Tahir Chaudary (Lead facilitator)
3. Dr. Hafiz Anwar and three facilitators from KP,
4. Prof. Saima Ali (team manager)
5. Dr. Ibrahim bin Afser
6. Dr. Samina Shams

Newborn Care organized by PPA KP recently.
The total number of participants were twenty seven. They were from the three Public teaching hospitals of Peshawar i.e., LRH, HMC & KTH, from DI Khan, Swat, Dir, Bannu, Lakhi Marwat, Charsada, Mardan and Swabi. The activities started with pretest. Then the participants were educated about the ‘Golden hour’ of newborn which include newborn resuscitation and post resuscitation care. Each component of the course was followed by hands-on practice session. The day ended with post-test (knowledge section) and Objective structured clinical examination OSCE (Practical session).Day-2 again started with Pre-test followed by the learning about Essential newborn care from 60 minutes of life which includes grey zone, green zone, yellow zone and red zone depending upon baby’s condition and danger signs. Each component of course was followed by hands-on practice session. Then participants were also educated about Neonatal-transport and Prevention of infection in Newborns. The day ended with post-test and OSCE. The last day started with Pre-test again. The lessons for this day were Oxygen therapy, Non- invasive and Invasive Ventilation along with demonstration of low-cost Bubble CPAP. Then the practice session and post-test held. The day ended with a graceful concluding ceremony where Prof Ashfaq Ahmed participated as chief guest. Prof Dr Mohammad Hussain President PPA-KP, Dr. Inamullah Khan from UNICEF, and Dr. Khizer Hayat of MNCH department spoke about the importance of such workshops in improving the Neonatal mortality in the country. Prof Khwaja Irfan Waheed appreciated the PPA-KP for its hospitality and the participants for their excellent performances. Prof. Dr Mohammad Hussain presented the traditional Shawls and caps to the guests facilitators while Prof Ashfaq Ahmad distributed the certificates amongst the participants. (PR)
