LRH organizes competition among Trainees on Current Evidence Based Practices

PESHAWAR: Lady Reading Hospital organized an academic competition among the trainees of the institution which was conducted by Dr Syed Imran Bukhari, Associate Dean Research, Dr Muhammad Faisal, Associate Dean PGME and Dr Zafar Iqbal, Associate Dean UGME. Prof Riaz Anwar Khan, Advisor on health to CM KPK was the Chief Guest on this occasion.

The objective was to identify the clinical challenge/problem, what are the current practices on the problem at LRH, what are the recent advances on the topic, identify the gaps in practice, how to address those gaps, application of UpToDate knowledge and take-home message.

The trainees who participated in the competition included Dr. Syed Gul Badshah, TMO Dermatology; Dr. Maria Jahanzeb, TMO Pulmonology; Dr. Haroon-ur-Rasheed, TMO Neurology; Dr. Arif Saleem, TMO Endocrinology; Dr. Akash Kumar Arora, TMO General Surgery; Dr. Umair Khalil, TMO ICU; Dr Mian Muhammad, TMO Pediatrics; Dr. Adeel Khan, TMO General Medicine.

Dr. Syed Gul Badshah talked about avascular osteonecrosis; a serious complication of steroid therapy in pemphigus and how UpToDate has helped them screen patients for early diagnosis of avascular necrosis. Dr. Maria Jahanzeb elaborated on HINI influenza and management practices in line with evidence-based practice. Dr. Haroon-ur-Rasheed provided in-depth summary of treatment of Multiple Sclerosis with emphasis on latest practices. Dr. Arif Saleem discussed Hyperaldosteronism and how to fill in the practice gaps. Dr Akash discussed Revision bariatric surgery, what the shortcomings are and how to address them. Dr Umair Khalil discussed Intracranial Pressure Monitoring in Neurotrauma Patients in light of recent evidence. Dr Mian Muhammad talked about Neonatal Hyperbilirubinemia, its current management practices and recent advances. Dr. Adeel Khan eloquently talked about Antibiotic use and selection in MTI-LRH and what are the recommended practices.

A number of eminent medical personalities from different institution were invited as Guests of Honour on this occasion. They included Prof Bakhtyar Zahid from Rehman Medical Institute, Dr Sidra Jabbar, North West General Hospital; Dr Amjad Mehboob, Bacha Khan Hospital, Swabi; Prof Muhammad Irfan, Peshawar Medical College; Dr Sultan Elahi Malik, Khyber Teaching Hospital; Prof Gul Rukh Qazi, Lady Reading Hospital. Dr Muhammad Haroon Khan, Medical Director Princess Zahra pavilion, Aga Khan University, joined on zoom and enlightened the participants about clinical decision support tools.
The best three trainees were selected for the First, Second and Third Prize. They were:

• Dr Adeel Khan, 1st Prize
• Dr Maria Jahanzeb, 2nd prize
• Arif Saleem. 3rd prize

Speaking on the occasion, Prof Riaz Anwar Khan emphasized the importance of evidence-based practices and asked questions from the contestants as well. Having served in LRH for 27 years, he reminisced on the past and asked the trainees to work hard. He congratulated the Deanery for arranging the activity.

Prof Irfan elaborated on how to make effective presentations. Prof Bakhtyar emphasized the importance of collaborative work. Dr Sidra Jabbar stressed upon the trainees to use evidence-based practices. Dean LRH-MTI, Prof Junaid Sarfraz, thanked all the participants and guests for gracing the great academic activity. (PR)
