Isra University Islamabad

ISLAMABAD: A two day 2nd National rehabilitation conference (NRC) 2013 was held in ISRA University Islamabad by ISRA Institute of rehabilitation sciences (IIRS) on 4th and 5th October 2013. Dr Muhammad Naveed Babur, Principal of IIRS was the chairman of the conference. The first national rehabilitation conference was held last year in October. IIRS is an institute for allied health professionals in the field of rehabilitation, it was founded in 2010.It offers both undergraduate and post graduate diplomas and doctorate in physiotherapy, speech and language pathology, electro neurophysiology, sports medicine and community based rehabilitation. The theme of the conference was,” Ensuring multidisciplinary approach in Rehabilitation”.
The first day of conference had eight different workshops on diverse topics of rehabilitation by experts in the field. Dr. Sahibzada Nasir Mansoor, a rehabilitation physician conducted workshop on “Making Medical writing and research simple for beginners”. Eminent physiotherapists from the country conducted four workshops, Observational gait analysis by Hafiz Muhammad Ashfaq, facilitation techniques to improve function based on Bobath concept by MrQamarMehmood, Myofacial trigger point release therapy by Muhammad Bin Afsar Jan and PNF techniques by Mr. Salabat Ali Khan.
A workshop on Psychological rehabilitation in disabled was conducted by Dr Khadija Tahir, Voice and voice disorders by Miss Sadaf Noveen, Boston bracing system for idiopathic scoliosis by Mr. Irtaza Kazmi and role of OT in improving fine motor skills by Mr. Adam Soomro. All the workshops were very well attended by a variety of allied health professionals.
The second conference day started with an inaugural session in which the chief guest was Dr. Shoaib, Executive Director of Higher Education Commission (HEC). The chief guest in his speech appreciated the conference being unique in its type by bringing together so many professionals related to rehabilitation of the patient at one platform and the concept of multidisciplinary team approach. Earlier Prof.Ghulam Qadir Kazi Vice Chancellor of Isra University welcomed the chief guest.
The second session of plenary presentation was chaired by Dr. Sahibzada Nasir Mansoor, In this session Dr. Sabaha Asim Wasti, from UAE talked on the essentials of multidisciplinary setup in medical rehabilitation. Dr. Shaista Habibullah talked on Pakistani Healthcare system and disability, Dr. Riaz Ahmed, orthopedic surgeon talked on impact of osteoarthritis and osteoporosis. Occupational therapist Mrs. Nausheen Gul gave an introduction to occupational therapy and its role in rehabilitation. Dr. Shazia Khalid highlighted the rehabilitation of senior citizens into the family for effective psychosocial functioning. Principal IIRS Dr. Naveed Babur talked about profession and professionalism.
The third plenary session was chaired by Dr. Sabahat Asim Wasti. Mr. Salabatali Khan spoke on clinical decision making, Dr. Sahibzada Nasir Mansoor discussed the multidisciplinary approach in rehabilitation of the amputees. Speech therapist Ms.Sadaf Naveen delivered talk on evidence based practice in speech and language therapy. Dr. Saeed Ashraf Cheema, plastic surgeon talked about role of physiotherapy in Burn complication.
Fourth plenary session was a free paper and poster session. The different topics covered included psychology, complementary and alternative medicine, cancer rehab, posture back pain and motivation. The best oral presentation award was given to Syeda Kaniz Fatima for “Major stressors during transition to parenthood among first time pregnant mothers”. The best poster award was won by Dr. Saeed bin Ayaz for,” frequency and predictors of chronic non angina post-operative pain after cardiac surgery “(PR)
