Laparoscopic Inguinal
Hernia Repair at DUHS/CHK

KARACHI: A two day Workshop on Advanced Laparoscopic Inguinal Hernia Repair was conducted at the Operation theatre Complex, Dow University of Health Sciences & Dr. KM Ruth Pfau Civil Hospital, Karachi on the 17th & 18th of July 2019. It was organized by the surgical team of DUHS, led by Prof. Foad Ali Moosa, Course Director, and Chairperson, Department of Surgery, DUHS under the patronage of Honorable Vice chancellor of Dow University, Prof. Muhammad Saeed Quraishy.

The Master trainers of this workshop were: Consultant Laparoscopic Surgeons, Prof. Mumtaz Maher, Chief surgeon at South City Hospital, Karachi and Dr. Khurshid Akhtar from Salford Royal Foundation Hospital, Manchester, U.K Both Master trainers demonstrated their specialized skills by live demonstration of surgeries for repair of inguinal hernias through  laparoscopic (keyhole) approach.

Inguinal Hernia is a very common problem among the masses in all age groups, and the surgery for its repair is commonly performed through open approach. The potential advantages of surgical repair of Inguinal hernia through Laparoscopic approach are: less postoperative discomfort and pain, reduced recovery time that allows earlier return to full activity, easier repair of a recurrent hernia, the ability to treat bilateral (both sides) hernias concurrently, improved cosmoses with tiny scars of wounds and decreased incidence of recurrence.

The workshop was very well attended by surgeons from hospital in Karachi besides interior of Sindh i.e. Hyderabad, Sukkur and & Larkana. (PR)
