PAME/EMAME organizes
Workshop on Peer Review

KARACHI: Pakistan Association of Medical Editors (PAME) in collaboration with Eastern Mediterranean Associaton of Medical Editors (EMAME) organized a Capacity Building Workshop for Peer Reviewers at PMA House Karachi on Saturday 27th September 2014. There were 20 participants with five facilitators and they all did well and were extremely satisfied. Dr. Fatema Jawad President PAME had taken this initiative and the participants found this academic activity very useful.

Conference on Publication Ethics

Saeed Allahwala Elected
Chairman PPMA

KARACHI: Pakistan Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association executive members have elected Saeed Allahwala as Chairman (PPMA) for the year 2014-2015 as its annual CEC meeting recently held in Karachi. Mansoor Dilawar of Searle IV solutions was elected Sr.Vice Chairman.

Dr. Shaiekh Kaiser Waheed of Medisure Laboratories Pakistan (Pvt) Ltd, Krachi was elected unanimously as the Chairman PPMA Southern Zone and Mr Ijaz Ahmed Siddiqui of Himont Pharmaceuticals (Pvt) Ltd, Lahore was elected as the Chairman PPMA Northern Zone Zone unopposed.

On the reserved two seats of women candidates, Dr. Shahida Qaiser (pharmatec Pakistan Karachi) and Dr Shehla J. Akram (Don Valley Pharma Lahore) were recommended by the house to be co-opted as the members of the Central Executive Committee of PPMA.

DUHS Condolence Meeting
for Prof. S. M. Rab

KARACHI: A Condolence Meeting was held at Dow Medical College, Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS) to condole the sad demise of Prof. S. M. Rab, Former Professor of Medicine & Former President of College of Physicians & Surgeons Pakistan (CPSP) who departed for his heavenly abode on 15th September 2014.

Paying tribute to the services of Prof. S. M. Rab in teaching and training, seniors faculty members of Dow University including Prof. Masood Hameed Khan, Vice Chancellor, Prof. M. Umar Farooq, Pro-Vice Chancellor, Prof. Junaid Ashraf, Principal, Dow Medical College, Prof. Salahuddin Afsar, Prof. Shahina Rab (daughter), Prof. Khalid Mehmood, Dr. Musarrat Hassan expressed heartfelt grief, sorrow and deepest sympathies to the family members of Prof. S. M. Rab.

Acknowledge and praising the professional services rendered, it was said that Prof. S. M. Rab was one of the founder fellows of CPSP and was also the initiator of postgraduate studies. He was a great mentor and students from all over the world came to his unit for postgraduate teaching and trainings. He was a role model and a source of guidance. Beside excellent teacher, he was also a good physician. The legacy of Prof. SM Rab will always be alive, and his services for medical profession will always be remembered. They all also expressed sympathies to the bereaved family members and prayed Almighty Allah to give high place to the departed soul in heaven. (PR)

Type 2 Diabetes may portend worse
survival in patients with heart failure

According to reports two studies presented on Sept. 16 at the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) 50th Annual Meeting, “among patients with heart failure of ischemic origin or heart failure with preserved ejection fraction, those who also had type 2 diabetes had a worse two- to eight-year survival.” The first study found that “30% of patients with ischemic heart failure in this registry had type 2 diabetes, and diabetes was independently linked with a 70% greater risk for mortality during follow-up,” while “the second study determined that a quarter of patients with heart failure and preserved left ventricular ejection fraction had type 2 diabetes, which was associated with a 39% increased risk for mortality during follow-up.” Both studies involved analysis of data from the Swedish Heart Failure Registry.
