Blood Donor Expo 2015 at
Expo Centre on 29th March, 2015.

KARACHI: In order to create awareness about thalassemia and to promote the culture of blood donation, the Help International Welfare Trust will organize Blood Donor Expo 2015 at the Karachi Expo Centre on 29th March, 2015. It is expected to collect around 5000 units of blood at Blood Donor Expo. This was stated by Syed Hasnain Rizvi, Head Media Cell, Help International Welfare Trust while addressing a press conference along with Mr. Rauf Tabani, Mr. S. M. Asghar, Mr. Adil Khan and Mr. Kamran Ahmed at Karachi recently.

It was also pointed out that there are around 100 thousand people in Pakistan suffering from Thalassemia. More surprisingly more than 1 crore people are Thalssemia carriers and that they do not know about it. More than 70% of the blood collected in Pakistan is used for patients of Thalassemia. Every year around five to six thousand children are born in Pakistan with Thalassemia. They further said that a lot of new laws and regulations are passed by the constitutional assembly but the implementation is very low. Both, the provincial and federal governments have not shown much interest in this regard. A law has already been passed on having the thalassemia test done of a couple before they get married but the implementation is yet to be seen. They also said that the biggest problem currently being faced is the lack of awareness and that around 90% of the people don’t even know what thalassemia actually is? This blood donation drive will also engage the youth in this noble cause which will be a biggest achievement as donating blood on a regular basis is a very healthy activity.
