JPMA/PAME Workshop
on Publication Ethics

KARACHI: JPMA in collaboration with PAME organized a workshop on publication ethics on Saturday 30th May 2015 at PMA House, Karachi. It was attended by a group of 22 participants out of which 14 were undergraduate medical students, 7 were medical school graduates (out of which 5 had recently finished their house job and 2 were recent graduates) and one was a PhD student. Registration was complimentary. Dr. Fatema Jawad, President PAME, Editor-in-chief, JPMA was the facilitator.

The topics which were discussed included ETHICS and why should it be observed, Definition of Research Misconduct and Components of Scientific Misconduct i.e. Plagiarism,        Fabrication, Falsification, Duplicate and Redundant Publication, Authorship Problems and who are the ethical authors, importance of Ethical Review Board, Conflict of Interest, Who qualifies to be an Author, what are the consequences of fraud being detected.

The session was interactive, in which not only students put forward their own views but also had a chance to ask questions and clarify any confusions. The main confusion that students had was about the thin line between plagiarism and comparing and contrasting different researches in the discussion section of the original articles. Meaning how could plagiarism be avoided. Other concerns included lack of mentors or approachable research bodies within their institutes to guide them through the research process, especially regarding supervisor issues.

The workshop was deemed productive in which all the participants had a common view that such sessions should be held regularly.(PR)
