KARACHI: Pakistan Paediatric Association is holding its 21st Biennial International Pediatric conference at Karachi from November 2-4, 2012. It is expected to be largely attended. In the conference national and international invited speakers, will make presentations for the improvement of child health care globally and particularly in Pakistan.
Pre-conference workshop on neonatology, developmental, social Paediatrics and Endocrinology are also part of the conference. University of Malaya team
visits Dow University

KARACHI: A six-member delegation from University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia headed by Sri Dr Ghuth Jamson, Vice Chancellor of University of Malaya (UM) along with the Members of Higher Education Commission (HEC) visited the Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS) on 13th September, 2012 as part of their initiative to visit Higher Education Institutions across Pakistan for future academic collaborations.
The visit of the delegation to Dow University was aimed at exploring opportunities to have collaboration with special emphasis on areas such as Engineering, Medicine, Information Technology and Business. The Delegation was received by Prof. Dr. Masood Hameed Khan, Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dr. M. Umer Farooq, Pro- Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Zeenat Ayoob, Registrar, Prof. Dr. Rana Qamar, Director-Quality Enhancement Cell and Prof. Dr. Shams Nadeem Alam.
Prof. Dr. Masood Hameed Khan briefed the delegation about the history and establishments of Dow University and the progress it has made over the years. The delegation was also briefed about University’s different Undergraduates and Postgraduates Program and health care service programs.
Vice Chancellor DUHS also briefed the delegation about the envisaged projects which the DUHS had undertaken and was about to initiate in collaboration with other different institutions. Later on, the Delegation visited various departments of Dow University and Dow Medical College.
Sri Dr Ghuth Jamson in his brief comments appreciated the measures being taken for the elevation of the University with the hope that it would go a long way in improving teaching, learning and research programs. (PR)

An Aspirin a Day may help slow
brain decline in elderly women

“An aspirin a day may slow brain decline in elderly women at high risk of cardiovascular disease,” according to a study published in the journal BMJ Open. “Around 500 at risk women, between the ages of 70 to 92, were tracked for five years -- their mental capacity was tested at the start and end of the study.” Notably, “those taking aspirin for the entire period saw their test scores fall much less than those who had not.”

 World Heart Day at SMBBMC

KARACHI: Prof. Khalida Soomro organized a symposium on World Heart Day at Shaheed Benazir Bhutto Cardiac Institute on 29th September 2012. It was very well attended by eminent cardiologists. Dr. Nadeem Qammer, Prof. Khalida Soomro and Dr. Haseena Chaghani spoke on cardiac problems and their prevention in female and children.
