at Khuda Ki Basti

KARACHI: Baqai Dental College organized a community dentistry student’s study visit to Baqai Medical Complex - Khuda Ki Basti Unit 4. They were accompanied by Head of the Department Prof. Asgar Ali Shigri and faculty members of his department.

Prof. Shigri briefed about the complex vision and mission of Prof. Fareeduddin Baqai and Prof. Zahida Baqai about health, education and poverty alleviation. He stated that the main aspects of Baqai Medical Complex Khuda ki Basti is to provide health facilities, education to children without any charges along-with free books, uniform and lunch as well as training to women to generate income for their families.

Salman Nazar, Administrator, escorted and guided students throughout the visit. The Unit started clinical activities in 2002. The facilities are availed by the surroundings population and the children studying in Saleem ullah Fehmi Memorial Primary School of this complex. He also inform the visiting student about the facilities available at the  Complex like School, OPD, Laboratories, Dentistry healthcare, Maternity including  24 Hours Delivery facilities for the pregnant women.

The students in the school were informed about the basic principles of Oral hygiene and also checked their oral health. (PR)

Bashir Dawood Transplant
OT Complex inaugurated

KARACHI:Bashir Dawood Transplant Operation Theatre Complex was formally inaugurated at Suleman Dawood Transplant Centre, Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT) recently. Speaking at the occasion, Dr. Adib Rizvi Director SIUT, welcomed the guests and also highlighted the SIUT health facilities. SIUT, he said, has been lucky that it earned extensive support from the philanthropic segment of the society who on the basis of its outstanding services posed confidence in the institution and donated funds and equipment’s generously.

He highlighted that the relationship with Basheer Dawood and his family goes back to year 2000 when they donated 120 dialysis machine to the center at SUT. Today SIUT is doing 850 dialysis per day which accounts for almost one third of dialysis in the country. The dialysis unit also has a special section for children and is the only center doing dialysis for children in this country.

Besides inpatient beds, it runs integrated clinics and has a large Chemotherapy, radiation and surgery sections. It has specialized unit for treatment of prostate cancer called Brachytherapy. In 2011, Basheer Dawood and his family laid the foundation stone 125 bedded for Suleman Dawood Transplant Centre to cater liver, heart, lungs, pancreas, small bowl transplantation.

The transplant theater complex, he said, will be able to do surgeries for all of these transplantations and has the capacity for doing four simultaneous transplant surgeries and a 10 bedded ICU as well. The transplant center houses skill development center and specialized laboratories. In future, the robotic surgery will also be performed in this complex for transplants. Basheer Dawood represents a legacy in the health care for underprivileged from dialysis to oncology to transplantation. This without doubt is one of the finest example for philanthropy, the family having spent over 3 billion rupees for all these projects being the biggest donation in health care in public sector.

Speaking on this occasion Mr. Bashir Dawood greatly appreciated the role of SIUT in providing specialized medical treatment to less privileged segment of community at large. He described the SIUT as a model institution where patients have been treated for last forty years to avail free quality medical services. (PR)
