College to be shifted to new campus in a
Year’s time-Prof. Zulfiqar
Vacant Faculty positions in basic sciences will be filled
soon through new inductions
SUKKUR: Over 70% of civil work at the new campus of Sardar Ghulam Mohammad Mahar Medical College spread over an area of about forty two acres has been completed and we hope to shift the college to the new campus in a year’s time. This was stated by Prof. Zulfiqar Soomro Principal of the College while talking to Pulse International recently. In the clinical side, we have the faculty as per the requirements of the regulatory bodies but in basic sciences, we have some vacant positions which too will be filled soon through new inductions. Shortage of teachers in basic sciences is being felt all over the country and Sukkur was no exception. However, the situation can be improved by offering them some incentives and lucrative pay which should be at least Rupees four lac for the professors, he added.
Prof. Zulfiqar Ali Soomro
SMBBMU at Larkana, he said, has five affiliated medical institutions which includes Chandka Medical College, Asifa Dental College, Sardar Ghulam Mohammad Mahar Medical College at Sukkur, College of Pharmacy and College of Nursing. Vice Chancellor of SMBBMU Prof. Aneela is taking keen interest to fill up the vacant posts. The jobs are being advertised soon and we will fill up the vacant positions in basic sciences through new inductions shortly. He was of the view that we can easily overcome the shortage of teachers in basic sciences by offering them some incentives and lucrative pay scalds which could be at least four lac per month for the Professors. We have also suggested that appointment of retired professors on two years contract can also go a long way in meeting the shortage of teachers. This is already being practiced at Gambat Institute of Medical Sciences and Khairpur Medical College, he added.
In the clinical side we have posts vacant in the discipline of neuro medicine, neuro psychiatry, dermatology and plastic surgery. Efforts are being made to induct qualified people to fill up these jobs. The NICVD Sukkur is functioning providing cardiac care facilities including bypass surgery and cardiac interventional procedures including primary angioplasty facilities. We plan to establish Institute of Urology affiliated with SIUT Sukkur which has been established by SIUT Karachi and is offering much needed facilities in this discipline to the patients.
Continuing Prof. Zulfiqar said that we also plan to establish a two hundred bed infectious diseases hospital for which site has been selected just about two Kilometers from the main campus. Plans are afoot to have an ambulance ready all the time at Dewan Mushtaq Coronary Care Unit in the city so that patients who need an interventional procedure can be shifted to the NICVD Sukkur immediately. At Piracha Hospital we plan to establish Dept. of Ophthalmology and Dept. of ENT. At the new campus accommodation will be provided to the teaching faculty for which the original plan of having Bungalows has been replaced with flats in multistory buildings which will save lot of space which can be used for further expansion. Efforts are being made to improve and expand teaching, training and patient care facilities in a gradual phased programme Prof. Zulfiqar added.
Prof. Zulfiqar Soomro, it may be mentioned here is a graduate of Chandka Medical College Larkana who graduated in 1990. Later he did his FCPS in Orthopedics in 2006. He was appointed as Principal in June 2020.
