RAWALPINDI: The Office of Research, Innovation & Commercialization (ORIC) organized an Open House at the National University of Medical Sciences (NUMS) Secretariat on the 20th and 21st of September 2017. The main aim of the event was to introduce the attendees to the mission and vision of ORIC and showcase the recently established ORIC facility on Campus.

The newly refurbished ORIC building was inaugurated by the Pro-Vice Chancellor NUMS, Maj Gen Muhammad Aslam HI(M)(Retd), followed by a prayer for the prosperity and attainment of the mandate behind its creation.

Students and faculty of the Army Medical College (AM College) Rawalpindi and Armed Forces Post Graduate Medical Institute (AFPGMI) Rawalpindi thronged the PDC Hall and the ORIC building on both days, to attend the introductory presentation highlighting the importance of such a facility for all Universities in General and a Medical University in particular, and they also rotated through stations that were set up at the ORIC covering all aspects of the support services that shall be available to the researchers in terms of Basic Transitional Research, Funding Opportunities, Publications, Clinical Trials, Industry Linkages, Intellectual Property, Application Development etc.

The Principal  Army Medical College, Maj Gen Saleem Ahmed Khan also graced the occasion with his presence and admired the efforts made to appraise the attendees about the provision of a platform for the assistance of researchers from their idea generation to a finished commercialized product/ service.  Desks were also set up for the Industry representatives from AMSON Vaccines & Pharma (Pvt) Ltd and NEXT Pharmaceutical for interacting with the visitors and discussing areas of possible collaboration and integration.  The Executive Director – Higher Education Commission, Dr. Arshad Ali and the Pro-Vice Chancellor NUMS, Maj Gen Muhammad Aslam HI(M)(Retd), also emphasized the significance and need for the medical researchers to tailor their research projects and endeavors according to the industry needs in their video messages that were played during both days. They stressed upon joint researches leading towards indigenous productions in the field of health sciences which in the long term may have a great positive impact on the country’s economy.

Uremic Cardiomyopathy: Mechanical or Chemical

The highlight of the second day was a Guest Lecture by Professor Magdi Yaqoob, Head of Nephrology and Translational Research, Queen Mary University, London. His talk entitled “Uremic Cardiomyopathy: Mechanical or Chemical” was an excellent blend of clinical and translational research and greatly inspired the audience. He also gave his valuable input to NUMS for setting up a state of the art Animal House at the Campus.
