KARACHI: Miracles do happen and this continues to happen at Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre the country’s premier postgraduate medical center which despite going through difficult times has kept up its traditions of organizing colorectal surgery course regularly for the last eight years. As usual there was no registration fee. The move was initiated by Prof. Surgeon Mumtaz Maher when he was serving at JPMC and even after his retirement this academic activity continues with Dr. Shamim Qureshi being the moving spirit behind it. The 8th course was held from September 30th to October 3rd where Prof. Adam Dziki from Poland was the master trainer. It attracted many surgeons from Peshawar, Lahore, Faisalabad, Hyderabad besides Karachi.

Speaking in the inaugural session Prof. Mumtaz Maher Chairman of the course said that Prof. Adam Dziki was a distinguished colorectal surgeon from Poland who is also chief editor of Polish Journal of Surgery. All these distinguished surgeons who come here to train Pakistani surgeons come here with a missionary spirit which needs to be commended. In the present era when it has become difficult for young Pakistani surgeons to go overseas for training for various reasons, we thought it was the most cost effective way of training our young surgeons. Practice of surgery, he said, was an art and these visiting surgeons have been disseminating surgical skills to the participants who come from all over the country. We invite just one master trainer and so many of our surgeons benefit. We cannot offer these guests from overseas any remuneration but love and hospitality, he added.
Prof. Tasnim Ahsan Director of JPMC in her speech commended the organizers of the course who have kept up this tradition for the last many years. For the last two years JPMC is passing through difficult times and we cannot offer them any help and assistance but even then they continue to organize this academic activity providing an opportunity to the Pakistani surgeons to benefit from the expertise of these visiting surgeons.
Earlier Dr. Shamim Qureshi organizing secretary in his welcome address said that it was in the Year 2004 that we started this training course and established the colorectal division in our unit at JPMC. It is a high risk specialty. All the master trainers who are invited are highly experienced colorectal surgeons and during their few days stay, they work hard. Prof. Adam Dziki our master trainer enjoys a good name in coloproctology in Poland and Europe. Surgical training, he further stated, was influencing the patient outcome. Time of decision making makes a different in surgical outcome. He thanked the Anaesthesia team and OT technicians and other support staff of JPMC for their devotion.
Prof. Adam Dziki in his brief address said that he was delighted to visit Pakistan and look forward to fruitful interaction with Pakistani surgeons during the next few days. The programme of the training course consisted of oral presentations followed by live demonstration of various surgical procedures while in the afternoon interesting clinical cases were presented in the Consultant Corner. The audiovisual arrangements and two way communication between the operation theatre and the auditorium was excellent. Each session was moderated by a Pakistani surgeon and the participants had ample opportunity to ask questions from Prof. Adam Dziki while operating on the patients in the operation theatre and clarify certain points when needed. There was tremendous improvement in the time management as well as compared to the last year.
