KARACHI: The Department of Medical Education at College of Physicians & Surgeons Pakistan has been instrumental in creating awareness about innovative concepts in medical education throughout Pakistan. As such the DME at CPSP can rightly take the credit for the present state of awareness and progress in medical education in the country. Apart from running two courses, Two Years Masters Programme in Health Professionals Education (HPE) and one year’s Health Care Systems Management (HCSM) to produce health administrators and managers, the Department of Medical Education at CPSP is also promoting research in the discipline of medical education.

PM&DC affairs become further complicated after alleged disputed, controversial elections

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Medical & Dental Council (PM&DC) is again in the news for the last couple of weeks and after the recent disputed, controversial elections, its affairs have become further complicated. It is generally felt that if the PM&DC has to regain its lost image, prestige and credibility, no former member of the Executive Committee should be eligible to hold any office till they are cleared by an independent commission.

Global child deaths down by almost half since 1990

NEW YORK/GENEVA: In 2012, approximately 6.6 million children worldwide – 18 000 children per day – died before reaching their fifth birthday, according to a new report released today by UNICEF, the World Health Organization (WHO), the World Bank Group and the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs/Population Division. This is roughly half the number of under-fives who died in 1990, when more than 12 million children died.

Clinical trial strives to provide optimal care during high-risk pregnancies with smaller than normal babies

Researchers are conducting a clinical trial to help determine the best timing of delivery in preterm pregnancies complicated by poor fetal growth. Preliminary results from the trial, which are published early online in Ultrasound in Obstetrics & Gynecology, demonstrate better than expected health outcomes in this high-risk group of fetuses.

Women have higher rate of spontaneous clearance of Hepatitis C virus

A study of patients infected with acute hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection found that women had higher rates of spontaneous viral clearance—undetectable levels of the virus without initiating drug therapy. Findings published in Hepatology, a journal of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases, indicate that the gene IL28B (rs12979860) and HCV genotype 1 are also independent predictors of spontaneous HCV clearance.
