LAHORE: All healthcare professionals need to update their clinical skills. Every medical institution should cooperate with each other; there is no point in competing. We all should combine our resources to ensure judicious use of the available facilities. This was stated by Prof. Javed Akram Vice Chancellor of University of Health Sciences who was the chief guest in the concluding session of International Conference on Health Professions Education (ICHPE 2018) organized by University of Lahore from October 14-17th  2018. Continuing Prof. Javed Akram said that we have started conducting research on genetic diseases which will help us in prevention of many diseases. Every medical institution Prof. Javed Akram opined should excel in some area and we should learn from each other.  These institutions should become role models for us. It is extremely important for us to inculcate humanity among the healthcare professionals. The students should also be involved in extracurricular activities to ensure their mental and physical health. Keeping this in mind, we at the UHS has recently started Sports competition, Naat and Qirat competitions. All efforts should be made to ensure that medical students when they graduate, become all rounder’s. They must uphold moral values. He further stated that some very important specialties and sub-specialties are at present neglected which needs to be looked into.

Giving details of numerous new programmes being started by UHS Prof. Javed Akram said that two years hospital management programme is being initiated.  In view of the enormous work load, we have also started programme in Health Informatics. We are planning to start Certificate Course leading to Masters in Medical Editing and Publications (Masters in Medical Journalism). Recently we have cloned skin graft which is very economical as compared to the imported skin grafts available at present. Research can be accelerated and better results achieved if institutions join hand with each other. If we follow the standard guidelines, patient care can become cost effective and UHS was trying to see that all this has positive impact on patent healthcare. Infection control committees are being established and strengthened to control infections which are a major cause of morbidity and mortality. Many of these infections can be prevented, he added.
