TEHRAN (ISLAMIC REPUBLIC OF IRAN): Iran gives too much importance to research and provides enough funding to the medical universities. Tehran University of Medical Sciences which at present ranks No.1 among the medical universities in Iran as regards research output and publications has fifty two biomedical journals which are published by university or its faculty members, twenty eight of them are in English language while the rest are in Persian. Faculty members of Tehran University of Medical Sciences publish about three thousand five hundred articles every year. This was stated by Dr. Payam Kabiri Consultant to Vice Chancellor for Research at Tehran University of Medical Sciences while talking to Pulse International a couple of months ago. Some of these journals, Dr.Payam Kabiri stated are owned by professional specialty organizations while others are directly owned and published by the university.

Consultant to Vice Chancellor for Research at Tehran University of
Medical Sciences and Mr.Shaukat Ali Jawaid Secretary General
EMAME photographed at Dr. Payam Kabiri’s office recently.

He further stated that at present twelve of their journals are covered by PubMed Central and nine are covered by ISI/Thompson Web of Sciences. Three of these journals are monthly, many used to have two issues annually and they have now been converted into quarterly publications. During the Year 2012 we got seven of our journals covered by PubMed Central and during the last ten months they published twelve hundred papers. These papers were downloaded forty six thousand times till November 2012. This was in addition to downloading from the journal websites. It shows that coverage by PubMed Central does increase visibility manifold. As we will improve visibility of our journals, it will results in more citations, Dr. Payam Kabiri added.
Dr. Payam Kabiri disclosed that they plan that by the end of 2013, they will have twenty titles in PubMed Central. This is our target and we hope to achieve that. He further stated that there have been five times more submissions ever since these journals were covered by PubMed Central. We generate XML files and submit it to PubMed Central. Previously we were outsourcing it but now we have developed our own software which we are using to send them the files. This software is designed as an add in application, he added.
Some of our journals, Dr. Payam Kabiri said are also published by professional publishers overseas like Springer. We have made an agreement with them and for three years the university will pay for their publication. Hopefully after that these journals will be in a position to sustain themselves from publication charges from the authors. We may subsidize the publication charges of our own faculty members. Dr.Payam Kabiri, it may be mentioned here, enjoys very cordial relations with staff in PubMed, PubMed Central as well as ISI Web of Sciences besides other important databases and his expertise in this area has helped the university in getting its journals indexed and covered by these important databases.
