PESHAWAR: The 6th undergraduate medical research conference was organized by Peshawar Medical College in collaboration with National Academy of Young Scientists (NAYS) and Social Welfare Society (SWS) on March 20-21t 20113. The event was attended by more than 200 students from over 20 institutes from all over the country. The scientific programme consisted of poster presentation, oral presentation, plenary sessions by highly qualified speakers, quiz competition as well as an interactive workshop.
Principal of Peshawar Medical College, Prof. Dr. Sajjad Ahmad welcomed the participants while Dr Bahadur Khan Marwat Vice Chancellor of Agriculture University spoke about the importance of medical research. Prof. Dr. Najib-ul-Haq, Dean of Peshawar Medical College, in his address also emphasized on the importance of research.
Speakers in the plenary session on “Tuberculosis and its control” included Prof. Arshad Javaid, Head of Dep’t. Pulmonology & CEO, LRH and Dr. Akmal Naveed Director Association for Community Development. They talked about signs & symptoms, causes, types of tuberculosis, why it is still a menace and reasons for its resurgence. Other issues discussed were, management of TB through a controlled program funded by the government. Overall TB situation globally and at a national level, progress NTP has made towards control of TB and challenges ahead for achieving MDG’s.
This was followed by two concurrent sessions where subjects related to public health and medicine came under discussion. These sessions were chaired by Dr Inayat-Ur-Rehman Khalil Dean Basic Sciences, Peshawar Medical College and Brig. Dr Saleem, Prof. of Anesthesiology, IIMC).
Dr. Afshan Hussain Khattak (Consultant Peadiatrics, SKMCH) talked about “Keeping the U alive in UMR” to the young and budding medical students, who have just entered the field of medical sciences and were eager to learn about the new concept of research. Dr Afshan, in her lecture eluded on various points of why research is important, how to develop a research question and various steps in conducting a research.
In the afternoon a workshop on communication skills was conducted by Mr. Adnan Bashir Khan (CEO, Organization for Youth & Development). Over hundred posters were on display during the conference.
Another plenary session was on “Chronic Renal Failure”. Prof. Nisar Anwar Head of Deptt. Nephrology, Khyber Teaching Hospital was the main speaker. He talked about the causes, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of chronic renal failure. This was followed by two concurrent sessions where oral presentations were made by various students from different institutions. In the concluding session Prof. Brig. Saleem who was the chief guest spoke on importance of research in medical education. He also congratulated the students and staff of Peshawar Medical College for organizing such an academic event.
