Former CPSP President
Prof. Sultan Faruqui passes away

KARACHI: Prof. Muhammad Sultan Faruqui former President of College of Physicians & Surgeons Pakistan who also served as Prof. of Medicine and Director of Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Center Karachi passed away last week. May God Almighty rest the departed soul in eternal Peace and give courage to the bereaved family to bear this loss. He leaves behind a large number of friends, well-wishers and family members to mourn his death. His Names-e-Jinaza was offered at the CPSP Campus on Thursday which was very well attended by senior members of the medical profession, CPSP Fellows, his friends and family members. Prof. Zafar Ullah Chaudhry President of CPSP, Prof. Khalid Masood Gondal, Prof. Abdul Razzak Sheikh and other Councilors of CPSP were also present on this occasion. Prof. Zafar Ullah Chaudhry along with other councilors also placed flowers on his coffin on behalf of CPSP. He became the second President of CPSP whose funeral prayers were offered at CPSP Campus. Earlier funeral prayers of Prof. S.M. Rab another former President and founder councilor of CPSP were held at the CPSP after his death.

Prof. Muhammad Sultan Faruqui

Late Prof. Sultan Farooqui was an administrator par excellence and a seasoned medical politician. He was affiliated with the CPSP for a long time and used to spend most of his time at the CPSP. He served as Director General of International Relations as well as Chief Controller of Examinations of the CPSP. Gradually he strengthened his grip over the CPSP to such an extent that though Prof. S.M.Rab and Prof. M. Hayat Zafar were elected Presidents but it was Prof. M. Sultan Faruqui who used to run and manage the affairs of the college. He used his contacts in the bureaucracy and Government to get facilities which helped a lot in the development and further progress and prosperity of the College of Physicians & Surgeons Pakistan. He also got vacated the barracks housing Central Drug Laboratory within the CPSP campus thus providing enough space for further expansion. He built the Air-conditioned mosque at the CPSP Campus and the beautiful lush green lawns at the CPSP Campus as well as the renovation of the old campus all became possible because of him. Eventually he decided to become the President himself for which he had to bring about certain changes in the rules and regulations which he successfully managed.

He was not an academician hence he ended up making some mistakes while dealing with academicians. He seldom used to listen but once he listened to someone and got convinced, he took prompt decisions and got them implemented within no time. Over the years he had created a team of fellows who were very loyal to him and became known as Sultan Faruqui group within the CPSP. At times he used to be very humble and helped a lot many fellows who used to love him but there was no dearth of those who hated him particularly during his later tenure as President because of the way he ran the CPSP affairs in a dictatorial manner. He had a very strong personality with personal likes and dislikes.  During later part of his Presidency as President of CPSP he took some ill-advised decisions and eventually paid a very heavy price for that when his entire group was wiped out in the elections except two councilors from Lahore including Prof. Rashid Latif. Those who surrounded him also kept him in the dark with the result that he was not aware of the ground realities. Some of his own best friends turned against him with the result that the next CPSP elections eliminated his group from the CPSP scene completely.

Prof. Sultan Faruqui did not come to the college for many years. He last visited CPSP after a gap of many years on April 17th 2017 on the invitation of Prof. Zafar Ullah Chaudhry when a delegation from Sudan was visiting the CPSP. He was accompanied by his wife Prof. Shabnam Faruqui.  Prof. Zafar Ullah Chaudhry took him around the campus and showed him the development which had taken place in his absence.  While visiting various sections, he felt tired and said he will come again for the visit and left. That proved to be his last visit to the CPSP Campus which he so carefully nurtured and built. He sent a message to Prof. Zafar Ullah Chaudhry a few days before his death which read “I know you must be busy. Shabnam wanted to thank you and convey her appreciation for marked development of CPSP. Prof. Sultan Faruqui”. Despite the events which took place during the last few years, this does not  in any way minimize the importance of his work developing the CPSP Campus and other developmental activities at various regional centers for which he will be remembered for ever. We are all human beings and have our own weaknesses, Prof. Sultan Faruqui was no exception.

In his condolence message Prof.Maj. Gen.(Retd) Muhammad Aslam former Vice Chancellor of University of Health Sciences Lahore has paid him rich tributes saying “ he had innumerable qualities and lived with grace,  dynamism and paving the pathways for others,. His personality, contributions and services will be remembered for decades to come. There is so little one can do to mitigate grief in such circumstances.”
