LAHORE: Pakistan Association of Social Psychiatry was formed during the 12th Neuropsycon held at Lahore from April 15-16, 2017. Prof. Riaz Bhatti was elected its President while Prof. Mazhar Malik was named as senior Vice president and Prof. Abdul Malik Achakzai its Patron.

Other office bearers elected are Prof. Rizwan Taj, Vice Presidents from Federal Capaital, Prof. Aziz ur Rehman Yousafzai (KPK) Dr. Ajmal Kazmi (Sindh) Dr. Col. (R) Khalid Mehmood (Punjab) and Dr. Hamid Rashid Khawaja (AJK) Dr. Nasir Hussain as General Secretary, Dr. Iftikhar Ahmed Minhas Finance Secretary and Dr. Imran Ijaz Haider as Editor. Executive Council members are Dr. Qazi Rashid Hameed, Dr. Col. (R) Sajjad Naqvi, Dr. Anwar-ul -Haq, Dr. Jamil Akhtar and Dr. Sobia Haqqi.

Giving details of the Association Prof. Riaz Bhatti said that it was just a year ago that dedicated group of psychiatrist started the effort to establish this Association consisting of psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers and other personnel from the discipline of psychiatry. Within a short span of time we were not only able to achieve its recognition locally but also internationally especially with World Association of Social Psychiatry and at present have one hundred members.

Prof. Mazhar Malik, Past President Pakistan Psychiatric Society who conceived the idea to from this association informed that objectives of the association are to promote understanding of interaction between individuals, and their physical and human environment. To promote mental health through education of health workers, policy makers, decision makers and community at large. To make the knowledge and practices of social psychiatry available to professionals in social psychiatry and other sciences beside research and training that can facilitate the understanding and interaction between social, cultural factors and mental health or illness.
