KARACHI: Medicare Hospital which is one of the oldest private hospitals in the city has been converted to Medicare Cardiac & General Hospital. Professor Dr. Pirzada Qasim Raza Siddiqui, Vice Chancellor Ziauddin University was the chief guest at the inaugural ceremony held here on 15thFebruary, 2015. Chairman, S.M. Sohail Trust, Dr. Tariq Sohail, Executive Director, S. Adnan Sohail, Prof. Abdul Samad besides senior members of the medical profession, corporate sector representatives & Faculty members of the Jinnah Medical & Dental College were also present on the occasion.

Professor Abdus Samad in his welcome address said that Medicare hospital is one of the oldest hospitals in the country and situated in the heart of Karachi city. Renowned names like Prof. Khawja Zaki Hassan, Prof. A.G. Billoo, Dr. Muhammad Ali Shah, Prof. Surgeon Rehman Prof. A. Samad and many other eminent personalities used to practice in this hospital. First open heart surgery, Prof. Samad stated was also performed by Surgeon Rehman in this hospital. It has now been converted in to a state of the art facility with the efforts of Mr. Aadnan Sohail, he added.

Professor Dr. Pirzada Qasim Raza Siddiqui speaking at the occasion said that establishment of this Cardiac Hospital is a great initiative towards the treatment of cardiac patients. This facility has entirely changed and is one of the best facilities I have witnessed under one roof. All the facilities which one can assume have been provided here which will be beneficial for people of our country. Private sector has played an important role in provision of healthcare services because healthcare is not on priority of our successive governments which spends only one percent of the GDP on health. He advised to arrange regular CME programs for healthcare providers for updates of latest development in the field of medicine.

Dr. Tariq Sohail addressing the Participants said that it will be one of the best heart centres of Pakistan, where all types of cardiac treatment will be provided and every effort would be made to provide quality care at an affordable cost. At the Trust level free and subsidized healthcare care is being provided in our Korangi Hospital and we will also try our best to provide subsidized healthcare at this facility. Any patient who needs financial support will not be refused assistance which is a challenge for us and I have passed instructions in this regard to my family, he added.

Dr. Asif Khan, Deputy Head of Cardiology at Medicare Cardiac Hospital speaking at the occasion said that cardiac artery diseases  burden is increasing rapidly day by day in Pakistan and its treatment is very costly. We have decided to provide quality care at affordable price and will focus on one step approach which consists of prevention, intervention and rehabilitation. We have decided to avail the services of print, electronic and social media to create public awareness, have community outreach programs, lifestyle modifications, Diet and exercise. We will provide standardized quality care and angioplasty services will be available round the clock and if patient needs surgery, it will be arranged within thirty seconds, he added.  

Lt. Col (R) Dr. Baqar Nawab, Head of Administration briefed about the facilities in Medicare Hospital. It is a state of the art 150 bedded hospital which will provide round the clock emergency services for cardiac patients including a dedicated cardiac emergency department, having round the clock availability for emergency angiography, angioplasty, and cardiac by-pass operations. In pursuit of higher standards in patient care, undergraduate and post graduate teaching and vocational training at all levels of ancillary staff, Jinnah Medical and Dental College has established a 120 bed hospital to house its Department of Cardiology, Cardiothoracic Surgery and other surgical services. Medicare Hospital is providing services from 1st December, 2014. The Hospital is offering comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic services to patients with cardiovascular diseases and other diseases. Clinical facilities comprise of dedicated in-patient cardiac wards, private rooms,10 bed ICU, 13 bed CCU, 4 HDU, 7 OT’s and 2 Catha labs.

 Our vision Dr. Baqar Nawab said is to create a comprehensive cardiac & General Hospital as a centre of excellence to cater all segments of society without compromising on quality. We are providing cardiac emergency and chest pain services round the clock. Our Cath Labs has facility to perform Right and Left Heart Catheterization Percutaneous Coronary Angioplasty , Balloon Mitral Valvoplasty, Intre-Aortic balloon Pump Insertion and renal and Endovascular procedures. All floors are centrally air conditioned and all beds with central oxygen supply and state of the art CSSD with latest equipment. Three operation Theatre on the first floor are fully functional while four OTs on fourth floor will be ready by April 2015. For infection control in OT, Standalone air handling units for each OT, twenty air exchanges per hour, antibacterial wall paint, antibacterial seamless PVC flooring, positive pressure and humidity control and dirty corridor for each theatre has been arranged.

Continuing Dr. Baqar said that elective surgical procedures will be performed which includes Orthopaedic surgery, Neuro spinal surgery, General surgery and Laparoscopic Surgery. Clinical Laboratory equipped with latest equipments, Pharmacy,  besides diagnostic facilities like Echo, ETT, Color Doppler Ultrasound, Pulmonary function tests, endoscopy/ colonoscopy, EEG, CT scan are available and MRI machine will also be installed. For support services rehabilitation centre with physiotherapist & Rehabilitation team are also available. Giving history of the Medicare Dr. Baqar said that Medicare Hospital was established in 1974, Medical School of Nursing in 1997, College of Medicine in 1998, College of Dentistry in 1999, Medicare Dental Hospital in 2000, Jinnah Medical College Hospital Korangi 400 bedded Teaching Hospital in 2002, Jinnah College of Nursing in 2009 and Medicare cardiac & General Hospital in 2015. We are in the process of ISO certification for all services provided in the hospital, he concluded

Mrs. Rozina Nazir, Head of Nursing stated that nurses are the backbone of our healthcare. Medicare recruits the full range of Dip Card professional nurses, critical care nurses, critical care technicians and certified Nurse Aides. All these support to best clinical practice and provide professional development opportunities. Clinical placement to the trainee Nurses are provided which is an excellent way to supplement undergraduate training. Assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation are the basic rule being implemented. Nursing is not a job, it is an adventure, she added.
