LARKANA: Pakistan Orthopedics Association is probably one of the most active professional organization of the country. Formed in the 80s it has maintained a steady commitment to learning and teaching. It has become a growing family of sub societies concentrating upon developments in various areas of the field like arthroplasty, spine, trauma, arthroscopy, ankle & foot surgery and hand surgery.

POA-Trauma Forum was reorganized in December 2016. Under the guidance of dynamic persons it immediately set upon formalizing of trauma care teaching to young surgeons. A two tier program was launched and three Basic Trauma Care workshops were held in various parts of Pakistan. Beginning with Quetta (Feb2017), Bahawalpur (July2017 and last one in Peshawar (Nov2017) three basic workshops were conducted in the country. Special emphasis was put on serving the lesser developed centers of the country. This year a Fourth workshop was organized in interior Sindh at Chandka Medical College Larkana. It was a two day educational activity held at the Department of Orthopaedic surgery CMC Larkana on Mar 2nd & 3rd 2018. The workshop was targeted at trainee residents and junior surgeons in Orthopedic Surgery.Department of Orthopedic Surgery CMC is Headed by Prof Jagdesh Kumar and Dr. Zamir Soomro coordinated the workshop. He had arranged the venue dividing it into lecture room and Skills lab area. It was well attended by the local trainees and young Orthopedic Surgeons from CMC Larkana , GMC Sukkur, Khairpur Medical College; Gambat Institute of Medical Sciences Jacobabad and Raheem Yar Khan.

It was inaugurated by Prof. K Das Principal Chandka Medical College. Prof Asadullah Mahar, Principal Khairpur Medical College was the Guest of Honour. Prof K Das welcomed the visiting faculty and the Department of Orthopedics for taking such an initiative. Dr. Zamir Soomro the course coordinator introduced the faculty members to the participants. Faculty comprised of local medical teachers and senior faculty members from all over the country. Prof Muhammad Idrees(Peshawar), Prof AsadUllah Mahar(Khairpur), Prof Faisal Nazeer Hussain(Lahore), Dr Amanullah Khan Kakar(Quetta),Dr Irshad Bhutto, Dr. Zamir Soomro, Dr Kazim Najad(Karachi) and Col Asim Naqvi(Pannu Aqil) instructed in the course. Prof Brig Suhail Amin (Rawalpindi) the Course Director introduced the audience to the POA trauma forum and its objectives. He welcomed the participants and told them that the course curriculum was divided into five modules. Ample opportunity was provided to the participants to practice their skills on saw bones hands on. The workshop feedback from the participants was excellent.The organizers had also arranged special visits to Garhi Khuda Bakhsh and Mohenjo Daro for the participants.

The POATF board meeting was held on March 2nd attended by most office bearers. After passing minutes of last meeting the agenda was discussed. Chairman and Course designer Prof Brig. Suhail Amin presented the plan of the Advanced Trauma Care Workshop in Orthopedics to serve as second tier training to be offered to those who have attended the basic training. It was decided to first hold only two advanced workshops this year and remove its short comings before embarking upon a regular program of both workshops. Financial matters and drive to increase membership was also discussed. The meeting ended with a word of thanks by Dr Kazim Najjad the General Secretary of the forum. (PR)
