KARACHI: We need to promote research culture, generate local data, opt for Evidence Based Medicine and enhance Pakistan’s contribution to world medical literature. This was stated by Prof. Javed Akram Vice Chancellor University of Health Sciences who is also President of Pakistan Society of Internal Medicine. He was speaking at the Pakistan Islamic Medical Association conference held at Karachi on June 6th in a session devoted to Healthcare Systems.

Medical Journalism has emerged as an important discipline in its own right

KARACHI: Medical Journalism, a combination of Science and Art has emerged as an important discipline in its own right with numerous sub-specialties but the regularity bodies as well as healthcare professionals in Pakistan have not yet realized its importance. The result is that we are almost fifty years behind in this field as compared to the developed world. This is also one of the important reasons for lack of research culture and Pakistan’s poor contribution to the world medical literature.

Pakistan has 21 cancer hospitals, fifty general hospitals with cancer treatment facilities but only ten facilities provide palliative care

KARACHI: Pakistan spends just fourteen US$ per capita on health if we take into account the Government of Pakistan spending in public sector during the year 2021. This was stated by Dr. Haroon Hafeez a palliative care specialist from Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital & Research Center while speaking at the 3rd Annual Conference of Pakistan Society of Internal Medicine held at Karachi from May 6th to May 8th 2022. He was one of the invited speakers at the conference where he made a presentation on Palliative Care, Challenges, Terminal Illness and Future Directions.

Clinical proceedings of the CRAFT conference on Human Reproductive Health

LAHORE: Society for Human Reproductive Health in collaboration and CRAFT organized its conference here from May 27th to May 29th 2022 which was very well attended. Prof. M. Arshad Chohan was the chief organizer and scientific programme of the conference was spread over many Plenary sessions, Consensus Meeting besides workshops. The conference started with Workshops on Friday. There were three workshops on Complicated Labor, Instrumental delivery, shoulder dystocia, episiotomy repair and 4th degree perineal tear for which facilitator was Prof. Farhat Naz.

KARACHI: Prof. Nadeem Rizvi former Head of the Dept. of Chest Medicine at JPMC Karachi was the first speaker in the session devoted to Pulmonology during the Third Annual Conference of Pakistan Society of Internal Medicine (PSIM) held at Karachi during March 2022. The topic of his presentation was Asthma Management beyond Prescription. He pointed out that globally about three hundred million people were suffering from Asthma. This number is increasing by 20-25% after every ten years. Local prevalence of asthma is not known in Pakistan as no local data is available.

A man cycling through the bazaar suddenly starts wobbling and falls to the ground, unconscious, foaming at the mouth, and his body twitching in convulsive movements. A crowd gathers around him, some wondering how to help him and others just to watch.
