LAHORE: July 11th 2020 was yet another historic day in the history of medical journalism in Pakistan as candidates of Certificate Course in Medical Editing started by the University of Health Sciences Lahore appeared in their Viva and final assessment examination. The panel of examines was headed by Prof. Maj. General Muhammad Aslam former Vice Chancellor of UHS, who has also served as Editor of Pakistan Armed Forces Medical Journal in the past. Other examines included Mr. Shaukat Ali Jawaid Chief Editor of Pakistan Journal of Medical Sciences and Secretary of Eastern Mediterranean Association of Medical Editors (EMAME), Prof. Muhammad Akbar Chaudhry former Principal of Fatima Jinnah Medical College and Chairman of the curriculum committee for the course besides Mr. Muhammad Atif, Director Media and Publications at UHS who is also the focal person for the course. Prof. Eice Mohammad a former member of Pakistan Medical & Dental Council who has served as Prof. of Medicine and Principal of numerous public and private medical colleges who was on a visit to UHS also observed the examination for some time.

Prof. Javed Akram Vice Chancellor of University of Health Sciences who has played a key role in the start of this Certificate Course in Medical Editing also graced the occasion with his presence during the examination and met the examiners. He also had a group photograph with some of the candidates who were appearing in the final assessment examination.

Thirty candidates were selected in the first batch out of sixty who applied. Eventually twenty six were eligible to appear in the final assessment and Viva examination as four failed to submit their Assignment Portfolios or did not attend the second contact session. One of the candidates could not attend since she was in quarantine because of COVID19 infection while two candidates could not satisfy the examiners. Hence they will have to appear in the Viva again with the next batch and also submit their Assignment Portfolio.

As per the result announced by the Examination Department of UHS, Dr. Saima Chaudhry in charge of Medical Education Dept. at UHS earned the first position (84 marks) which she shared with Prof. Col. Alamgir Khan, Prof. of Physiology at Army Medical College who is also associated with Pakistan Armed Forces Medical Journal (84 marks). Dr. Shamaila Mohsin who is affiliated with PAFMJ earned the second position with 83 marks while Prof. S. H. Waqar Prof. of Surgery at PIMS who is affiliated with Annals of PIMS bagged the third position with 82 marks.

It may be mentioned here that this is the first course of its kind in Pakistan which has been started by UHS in collaboration with senior medical editors who are founder members of Pakistan Associate of Medical Editors (PAME). It aims at professional capacity building of the editors and those interested to take up medical journalism as an additional career. It is a six months course with two contact sessions of four days each while the rest of the course is online. Participation in both the contact sessions, submission of final assignment portfolio are mandatory. Each candidate is provided with a mentor to guide and assist them during the course. The examination criteria included ten marks in each of the four tests held during the two contact sessions. The mentors were asked to judge the performance of their candidates and give them up to five marks based on their performance. Assignment Portfolio presentation had fifteen marks, contents of the portfolio had twenty marks and viva examination also had twenty marks. The candidates were required to earn a cumulative score of sixty marks out of one hundred marks to pass the examination.

The second batch will be inducted shortly for which applications are being called next week. The advertisement giving details about the course, the eligibility criteria and fees will appear in an advertisement in leading national Urdu and English newspapers. According to reports the last date for submission of applications with course fee which is Rs. Forty thousand is August 17th 2020. All medical, dental, allied health sciences i.e. pharmacy, physiotherapy, nursing graduates are eligible to apply. Preference will be given to those who are already affiliated with any health science journal.
