It may be mentioned here that the idea to start this Certificate Course was first floated in 2006 and this has been under discussion since then. Later it was Maj.Gen. Muhammad Aslam when he was Vice Chancellor of University of Health Sciences who took keen interest and further meaningful discussions were continued among the senior medical editors in Pakistan at PAME as well as EMAME conferences. However, it was at the EMAME Conference held at Shiraz in Iran in 2015 that it finally got some shape and work started on preparation of the likely contents for the curriculum. However, when he retired from UHS, the project got stuck up. When Prof. Javed Akram was appointed VC of UHS, he again revived the project and Mr.Shaukat Ali Jawaid was appointed as the course coordinator. Those who have made enormous contributions to realize this dream include Mr.Shaukat Ali Jawaid Chief Editor Pakistan Journal of Medical Sciences who is also Secretary of EMAME, Dr. Fatema Jawad Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Pakistan Medical Association, Prof. Jamshed Akhtar Editor of Journal of College of Physicians & Surgeons Pakistan who is also President PAME, Prof. Akhtar Sherin Chief Editor of Khyber University Medical Journal all from Pakistan. Some distinguished editors from overseas also gave their valuable suggestions and in put in finalizing the course contents and Resource Book. They included Prof.Ahmad Badar from Saudi Arabia, Prof.Sultan Ayoub Meo also from Saudi Arabia and Prof. M.B. Rokni Editor Iranian Journal of Public Health from Tehran University of Medical Sciences. Apart from Prof. Javed Akram who was also the moving spirit behind the National Conference on Medical Journalism which was hosted by UHS in January 2019, Prof. M. Akbar Chaudhry former Principal of Fatima Jinnah Medical College at present affiliated with Azra Naheed Medical College Lahore, Mr. Atif Director Media and Publications at UHS have also contributed in different ways for the start of this certificate course.

The contents of the course, teaching methodology and the assessment criteria have all been finalized. The candidates will also be provided a soft copy of the Resource Book. To begin with UHS will start the basic course i.e. Certificate Course in Medical Editing and those who will qualify it, will be eligible to get admission in the Advance Certificate Course in Medical Editing which will also be of six months duration, in two blocks with two contact sessions of five days each.
