an International Diabetes and Endocrine Conference

Workshop sessions, 4 Meet the Experts Sessions and 10 symposia

KARACHI: Baqai Institute of Diabetes and Endocrinology (BIDE) an important institution of Baqai Medical University headed by Prof. Abdul Basit is celebrating its 20th anniversary by organizing an international Diabetes and Endocrinology conference from Friday to Sunday, August 19-21st 2016. The meeting being organized in collaboration with Diabetic Association of Pakistan has attracted over fifty international speakers from overseas and the organizers have finalized an interesting scientific programme which consists of Key Note Lectures by eminent medical personalities in the field of Diabetes and Endocrinology in six scientific streams i.e.  Basic and Clinical Sciences, Diabetic Foot, Diabetes and Ramadan, Living with Diabetes, Maternal and Child Health besides Endocrinopathies.

Other salient features of the conference include twelve plenary sessions, three workshop sessions, four meet the Experts Sessions, ten parallel symposia on different topics besides fifteen pre-conference Satellite Symposia.  As per scientific programme, Public Awareness Session will be held on Friday August 19th from 9.00 AM to 11.00 AM. Alumni of BIDE Diploma Holders will be  honoured  at a special session being held the same day from  3-4 PM while the formal inauguration of the conference will take place at 7.30 PM on August 19th 2016.

On Day two of the conference on August 20th, Prof. Paul Thornalley will deliver the Keynote Lecture on Diabetes and Biomarkers for vascular and metabolic Health: Clinical and practical implications while Prof. A.K. Azad Khan from BIRDEM Bangladesh will be the other Keynote speaker who will talk about Organizing Diabetes care in resource poor societies and share the Bangladesh experience with the delegates. In the Diabetic Foot Session on August 21st, the Keynote speakers and their topics are Global Strategies to reduce amputation rates worldwide by Dr. Kristien Van Acker from Belgium and Diabetic Foot: African Experience by Dr. Zulfiqar Abbas from Tanzania. In the Diabetes and Ramadan Session on August 21st, the Keynote speakers and their topics are Formulating guidelines for diabetes management during Ramadan: do we have enough evidence by Prof. Wasim Hanif from UK and Safety or fasting in people with diabetes during Ramadan by Dr. Khaled Tayyab from Saudi Arabia.

In the special session on Living with Diabetes being held on August 20th, the keynote speakers are Ms. Barbara Eichorst from USA who will speak on changing role of diabetes educator to case manager: the New Era while Ms. Susan Clever from Germany will be talking on Psychological support for people with diabetes. In the Maternal and Child Health session on August 20th, Prof. Graham Hitman will speak on Pregnancy and early childhood: an opportunity for diabetes prevention while Prof. Akhtar Hussain will be talking on Micronutrient intervention in pregnancy and cardio-metabolic risk in the new borns. Keynote speakers in the Endocrinopathies session are    Dr. Hamed Farooqui from UAE who will speak on Soft bones and hard evidences: The evolving trends in osteoporosis while Prof. Liaquat Ali from Bangladesh will talk on Stem Cell Therapy n Diabetes: Reality and Myths.

The topics which are going to be discussed in the parallel sessions during the conference include  Patient Centered integrated diabetes care model, Diabetes in MENA region, obstacles and difficulties and regional plans,  Vitamin D and Diabetes,  National Diabetes Strategy for Diabetes Prevention: Experience in Qatar, Establishment of  Diabetes clinics in low resource situation, diabetes and disasters, Is Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy more central than peripheral, PAD in this Region, Understanding Foot mechanics, Footwear for low resource countries, Diabetic Foot infections, Newer diagnostic modalities in  diabetic foot infections, Charcot arthopathy: a diagnostic dilemma. Workshops on Identifying feet at risk, When and how to debride, Is pressure off loading necessary and What’s new in foot care advice i.e. latest recommendations by IWGDF  will be held on August 21st.

On Day three of the conference August 21st, the topics which will come under discussion include Characteristics of fasting and Ramadan: specific diabetes education trends, Incretion based therapies in Ramadan, Ramadan fasting and nutritional advice. Again there will be four workshops on Mastering in insulin prescription, SMBG Guidelines for Pakistan, Getting Fit and Living a healthy life with Diabetes besides Innovations in Diabetes Self-Management Education. In the parallel sessions there will be invited lectures on Antenatal Care in GDM, Screening for GDM and Medical Management of GDM. Management of Obesity, Weight Gain and Obesity in Women in Arab World, Anemia in Pregnancy, Newborn Nutrition, Pregnancy complicated with Hypertension, for how long one should take metformin, Shall we be treating all women with HRT, Biochemical assessment of Metabolic Bone Disorders. There will be a workshop on Thyroids as well.
