KARACHI: Disaster management and trauma is a priority on emergency preparedness, through which an individual or community that are prepared to face any disaster or incident. This was stated by Dr. Saeed Minhas a noted orthopaedic surgeon addressing an awareness workshop on “Golden hours of Disaster Management and Trauma” organized by the orthopedic department of Baqai Medical University in collaboration with Primary Trauma Care Foundation recently.

The workshop was aimed to create awareness among the participant’s doctors and students in this area. We are passing through phases when we are facing many disasters situation. He further said that Disaster management program and trauma has developed awareness that help to address the needs of vulnerable lives before disaster strike. In early days disaster management and trauma program was usually taught to scouts only but now it is necessary to take this program in medical education curriculum. Doctors doing house job duties are not aware of how to handle such situations and manage these patients. Hence this is our social or moral responsibility to educate them, he added.

Chancellor of Baqai Medical University Prof. FareedUddin Baqai in his address said that most of the doctors are not aware how to handle trauma because they are not trained. I myself got trained in trauma management from England after completion of his MBBS Most of the surgeons have no background or experience to work in disaster management and trauma? Doctors, he said, should know how to tackle the injured. Doctor should know how much counts of blood points are required to rescue that patient initially.

Dr. Saeed Minhas emphasized the importance of creating awareness among the doctors, surgeons, students as well as common people. In the two days primary trauma care workshop we try to educate the participants about primary care of trauma briefly. All institutions are requested to include disaster management and trauma care as a part of curriculum. The course is specially designed for student’s individuals, professionals, organizations. Through demonstration he discussed various aspects of trauma management. During terrorist attacks in Pakistan, many casualties occur and most of them suffer injuries due to unprofessional handling of victims. Trauma actually means to safe your self first. He further stated that Karachi has only three major trauma centers located at Jinnah Post Graduate Medical Centre, Civil Hospital Karachi and Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for 1.8 million population which is not enough to efficiently manage the trauma cases.
