Prof. Javed Akram in his address highlighted the functioning of PSIM since its inception which includes the launching of PSIM’s official publication Journal of Pakistan Society of Internal Medicine. We are also planning to start a DocBook shortly, he added. Prof. Ejaz Ahmad Vohra commended the importance given to the mother specialty of internal medicine. It is a very good initiative. He also suggested to start a one year Fellowship programme in Internal Medicine. Admission to medical colleges, he opined, should continue on merit but arrangements can be made to utilize the female physicians on part time or contract basis to make use of this talent.

Prof. Saeed Hamid remarked that internal medicine is the mother specialty and we should seek collaboration of all other professional specialty organizations. Personal contact has its own importance and we must plan to have some face to face meetings. Prof. Iftikhar referred to Doctor shopping by the patients and wishes that patients should first consult a GP/Family Physician and internal medicine specialist can take care of most of the diseases. Prof. Zaman Sheikh referred to the international Diabetes Course for the Family Physicians which PSIM is currently conducting while Dr.Shehla Naseem highlighted the training programme by College of Family Medicine Pakistan to build the professional capacity of Family Physicians.

Mr. Khalid Mahmood Chief Executive of Getz Pharma highlighted the importance of primary health care, rational use of antibiotics and rational use of drugs in diarrhoea management. All these issues, he opined, can be covered in a special dedicated session devoted to Infectious disease for which they can even arrange some guest speakers. Primary healthcare has remained neglected in Pakistan that is why we have very high maternal, infant mortality. Compliance with EPI programme in Pakistan is dismal as such PSIM offers an important platform to highlight all these issues, On January 25th we will host a meeting at our factory premises where we have a state of the art auditorium with seating capacity of over three hundred people and it will be at your disposal the whole day, he remarked.

Prof. Lubna Baig and Dr. Sonia Ijaz Haider thanked the organizers to give importance to the emerging discipline of medical education in the conference. Mr.Shaukat Ali Jawaid Chief Editor of Pulse International reminded the organizers to ensure that they have a functioning scientific committee which looks at the topics before accepting it for oral presentations. Not only that the Chairpersons must be awake to monitor the speakers to ensure time management. The speakers should not exceed their allotted time limit so that enough time is given for discussion.
