Government earns tremendous hatred
by mishandling Nawaz Sharif’s illness

ISLAMABAD: The Government has earned tremendous hatred by mishandling the crisis which it had itself created while dealing with the illness of Mian Nawaz Sharif the three time Prime Minister of Pakistan. It failed to get the credit by taking a decision on humanitarian grounds and allowing him to go abroad for medical treatment as per recommendations of its own constituted Medical Board without any conditions but now the credit has been taken by the Courts. This has once again exposed the incompetence and inefficiency of the government and it appears the Prime Minister is surrounded by some foolish friends who cannot foresee the consequences of such decisions.

To begin with when Mian Nawaz Sharif was in Adiala Jail, when his health condition deteriorated, he was shifted to PIMS instead of the Rawalpindi Institute of Cardiology knowing fully well that he already had surgery and stenting with known history of serious cardiac diseases. Then despite the fact that he was in Kot Lakhpat Jail, he was taken by NAB to its offices and arrested again, perhaps the objective was to humiliate him too much. In Kot Lakhpat Jail the request for a standby cardiac ambulance was not entertained. It was in the NAB custody that his condition deteriorated to such an extent that it became a medical emergency and he had to be rushed to the hospital. Here again instead of taking him to Punjab Institute of Cardiology in view of his known cardiac history, he was taken to Services Institute of Medical Sciences for reasons best known to the authorities. When his platelets dropped to a highly dangerous level and the members of the government appointed medical board failed to manage it, Dr.Tahir Shamsi a hematologist was called from Karachi. Despite best efforts, doctor failed to identify the reasons for his sudden drop in platelets. In view of the numerous co-morbid conditions, even the drugs prescribed did not work but serious adverse effects were noted which sent an alarm bell among everyone. Having failed to find some clue and correct diagnosis, the medical board finally decided that he needs to be taken abroad for further treatment.

Since the government was reluctant, the matte went to Islamabad High Court which heard the petition in emergency and allowed him bail for eight weeks so that he can get treatment of his choice whether in Pakistan or overseas. Had the better sense prevailed on the government and its advisors and knowing fully well the critical condition of the patient, they could have allowed him to go abroad rather than creating hurdles and putting conditions and eventually it was again the courts which had to decide this case and allowed him to proceed abroad for treatment with a promise to return back after four weeks or as soon as his medical conditions permits to travel. The treatment period can be further extended depending on the medical reports. During these two weeks, the government and its Ministers kept on changing their decisions on daily basis which did not do any good to the government. On the other hand even its own coalition partners did not subscribe to the government viewpoint. It was often pointed out that he along with his daughter Maryam Nawaz had returned after the court judgment knowing fully well that they were going to the Jail while his wife lay on death bed in a London Hospital. In fact it is a different Mian Nawaz Sharif with whom they have to deal with. He had made it clear that it is better of die rather than living a life of disgrace and humiliation.

It is our misfortune that Pakistan which needs political stability desperately which is a pre requisite for economic development t, is being destabilized by foolish friends and advisors of the government. Perhaps they are not aware of its political consequences. Popular political leaders needs to be defeated politically and any other means has always proved to be counterproductive. The whole nation continue to pay the price of judicial murder of late Mr. Z. A. Bhutto till today. It is frightening to hear the rumor’s that Punjab will also get its Bhutto.

If this was not enough, the government is bent upon the trial of former President Asif Ali Zardari in Punjab rather than in Sindh. He and his sister another PPP leader Faryal Talpur are imprisoned in Punjab which is bound to create lot of hatred against the province of Punjab. Let us not forget that Bhutto was hanged in Rawalpindi, Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto was assassinated in Rawalpindi, Khursheed Shah was arrested in Islamabad, and even the speaker of Sindh Assembly was arrested from Islamabad rather than from Karachi and in Sindh province. No one will disagree with accountability if it is fair, transparent and across the board but using it for political purposes is bound to have far reaching consequences for the country. It was such short sighted decisions that we lost half the country but even then have failed to learn any lesson. It is high time that Mr. Asif Ali Zardari, Faryal Talpur and other PPP leaders are tried by courts in Sindh rather than in Punjab and everyone in custody should be provided medical care of their choice when needed.

Unfortunately the country was never so weak and disturbed and the society so much polarized and fractured as it is today. The enemies were waiting and when India realized that now internal political situation in Pakistan has deteriorated to the worst level, it struck and annexed the occupied Jammu and Kashmir by passing legislation. Kashmiris are fighting for their life living under Curfew and facing the atrocities of the occupying Indian forces and we are just appealing to the world community to take a note of it. India never had the courage to take such steps in the past which it has now undertaken just because of our inability and incompetence. Our survival lies in a democratic order, we need fair and free elections and people’s mandate must be respected by everyone. We need to promote love, affection, harmony among various sections of the society, among different provinces but the rulers are sowing the seeds of hatred and injecting venom among the future generations. Once they grow and become plants and keep on growing as they find the conducive atmosphere, it will be extremely difficult to find any healing cream or ointment which could heal the wounds afflicted by hatred. It is often said that time is the best healer but there are certain wounds which even does not heal with time. One sincerely hopes that the situation will not go that far and sensible politicians in all the political parties will sit together in the Parliament and defuse the crisis and find an amicable solution. Depending on honesty alone without being supplemented with competence and ability is a sure prescription for disaster that is what we are seeing today.
