Journalism from January 18-20th 2019

Programme includes 5 Pre-conference workshops, 5 plenary talks
besides panel discussions on important topics and free papers

UHS also plan to start Masters Course in
Medical Journalism from next year

LAHORE: University of Health Sciences (UHS) has decided to organize a National Conference on Medical Journalism from January 18-20th 2019. Distinguished Editors of various medical journals from all over the country besides a few delegates from Iran, Saudi Arabia and UAE are also being invited to participate and enrich the conference deliberations with their presentations. The main objectives of the conference are to promote the art of medical writing, scientific publishing and research culture in the country to increase Pakistan’s contribution to medical literature. The university also plans to start a Master’s Course in Medical Journalism from next year. This initiative to organize this conference on medical journalism which it is hoped will now be a regular feature in the university’s academic calendar has been taken by Prof. Javed Akram who has recently taken over as the new Vice Chancellor of UHS. The project to start Master’s Course in Medical Journalism at UHS was conceived by the former VC Prof.Major Gen. M.Aslam and some preliminary work was also done by a select committee of Pakistan Association of Medical Editors (PAME) but due to changes in the university administration, it could not make any further progress. This project has now been revived and further work is in progress. Representatives from PM&DC and HEC looking after the evaluation of medical journals are also being invited to the conference.

Prof. Javed Akram VC UHS is Chairman while Mr. Mohammad Atif Director Media and Publications at UHS is the secretary of the organizing committee respectively. Mr.Shaukat Ali Jawaid Chief Editor of Pakistan Journal of Medical Sciences who is also Secretary of EMAME has been selected as Chairman of the Scientific Committee. Others who were identified and have accepted to be member of the organizing committee includes Prof. Maj. Gen.M.Aslam Pro VC NUIMS Rawalpindi, Prof. Jamshed Akhtar President PAME from Karachi, Prof. Akhtar Sherin former President of PAME from Kohat, Prof. Khalid Masood Gondal VC KEMU Lahore, Prof.Akbar Chaudhry from Lahore, Dr. Masood Jawaid from Pakistan Journal of Medical Sciences Karachi. Others members who are being invited to be members of the Organizing Committee include Prof.Amar Zaman Khan VC FJMU from Lahore, Dr. S. H. Waqar from Islamabad, Prof.Saira Afzal Editor of Annals of KEMU from Lahore, a representative from the faculty of Sheikh Zayed Hospital Lahore and a representative from Dept. of Journalism from Punjab University.

There will be an orientation seminar for Health Journalists on Thursday January 17th 2018. The pre-conference workshops will be held at UHS, SZH, KEMU, FJMU and Azra Naheed Medical College. The topics which will be covered during these workshops include Medical Writing, Peer Review, Publication Ethics, Manuscript Management Systems OJS etc., Grant Writing for funding for research. The facilitators for these workshops have also been identified who have accepted the invitation. Another meeting of the organizing committee is scheduled to be held on August 28th in the afternoon.

Plenary Talks: Mr.Shaukat Ali Jawaid will deliver a plenary talk on Past, Present and Future of Medical Journalism in Pakistan while Prof. Jamshed Akhtar’s presentation will be on Challenges in Peer Review. Prof. Maj.Gen. Aslam will speak on the Role of Universities, Medical Institutions in promoting Medical Journalism, Prof. Akhtar Sherin will make a presentation on the Role of regulatory bodies in promoting the discipline of medical journalism in Pakistan while Dr. Farooq Rathore from PNS Shifa will speak on Predatory Journals- How to avoid getting trapped.

The organizing committee has also decided to invite three to four guest speakers from Iran, UAE and Saudi Arabia. Further details are being worked out and will be made available soon.
