in Medical Editing being started by UHS
Thirty Five of the applicants have either
PhD, FCPS or M.Phil qualifications

LAHORE: There has been a very heartening response to the first ever Certificate Course in Medical Editing being started by the University of Health Sciences Lahore. As many sixty candidates from health and allied health sciences have applied for this course and thirty five of these applicants have earned qualifications of Ph. D, FCPS, M. Phil or Masters in allied health sciences. Another important fact is that almost twenty eight of the applicants are affiliated with biomedical journals being published by various medical institutions, specialty organizations.

About thirty candidates have been short listed after scrutiny and the course is expected to start from the first week of September 2019. The first four days contact session is likely to be from September 4-7th 2019. It may be mentioned here that this six months blended course has two contact sessions of four days each. Completion of five assignments is an essential requirement for this course. Those who are already working with some biomedical journals were given preference in selection in the first batch as the objective is to help improve the standard of Pakistani biomedical journals, build the professional capacity of the Editorial staff so that they can also help improve the quality of the manuscripts before they are accepted for publication.

This is an ambitious project of Pakistan Association of Medical Editors (PAME) and many renowned editors of medical journals have worked hard to realize this dream by formulating the contents, curriculum of the course. Many distinguished editors from Pakistan and overseas will be involved as facilitators and assessors of assignments of the candidates. It is also planned that some of the brilliant candidates from the first batch will later on be involved in the course as facilitators. The course fee is Rs. 40,000/-. (Forty thousand only). Those who qualify this Basic Course will then be entitled to join the Advance Course in Medical Editing which will also be of six months duration with two contact sessions of four days each. Former Vice Chancellor of UHS Prof. Maj.Gen. Mohammad Aslam and the current Vice chancellor Prof. Javed Akram deserve special mention, their efforts needs to be commended for the start of this course. It is hoped that all these efforts will go a long way in promoting the art of Medical Writing and science of Scientific Publishing in Pakistan.

From the University of Health Sciences, Mr. Mohammad Atif Director Media and Publications, Dr. Saima Chaudhry from the Dept. of Medical Education and Dr. Nadia who is looking after the UHS official journal Biomedical have contributed a great deal in this project.
