PESHAWAR: After Spinal Surgery and Orthopaedic Department at Ghurki Trust Hospital affiliated with Lahore Medical and Dental College headed by Prof. Amer Aziz an eminent orthopaedic and spinal surgeon who publishes academic audit of his unit every year, the Cardiothoracic Surgery Unit at Lady Reading Hospital Peshawar is perhaps the only other academic unit in a teaching hospital which does this exercise and publishes the details of work done every year. This unit is headed by Dr. Amer Bilal a noted Cardiothoracic Surgeon with keen interest in academics. In fact publication of academic audit should be made mandatory for every academic unit so that they can show their performance in the preceding year but only those units will accept and opt for this that have something worthwhile to show. Hence, the efforts made by people like Dr. Amer Aziz and Dr. Amer Bilal needs to be commended.

According to the details provided by the Cardiothoracic Surgery Unit at Lady Reading Hospital Peshawar for the Year 2014, the unit performed 2287 different procedures besides examining 4,782 patients in the Out Patients Department. A unique feature of the working in the department is that all the patients record is computerized, clinical audit is done and entered on monthly basis in the database, Internet and Smart TV facility is available for the Trainee Medical Officers in office, Ward and Intensive Care Unit. The eight beds ICU in Private section have four ventilators and it is equipped with electronic beds, invasive monitors, oxygen and suction points with electric panels.  Six beds High Dependency Unit (HDU) have six hydraulic beds, invasive monitors, suction machine and crash trolley.  Similarly six beds female HDU has six invasive monitors, suction machine and  crash trolley.

During the Year 2014 four Trainee Medical Offices have passed FCPS in Thoracic Surgery. The unit organized 45 multidisciplinary meetings with Pulmonology and Radiology department.  Monthly audit meetings and counseling session for TMOs is a routine. Mock clinical examinations are conducted for FCPS candidates in Thoracic surgery which are attended not only by the TMOs in the unit but by trainees from other institutions in the province.

Research is an important component in the working of the unit which is evident from the fact that so far the unit has published ninety five scientific papers which includes seven papers published during the Year 2014. A total of fifty eight presentations were made from the unit at various conferences within the country and overseas in 2014.
