organize seminar on eliminating Hepatitis

LAHORE:  Gujranwala Liver Foundation in collaboration with Fatima Memorial Hospital organized a seminar entitled “Together we can eliminate Hepatitis - a forum for formulating a joint strategy for combating Hepatitis” at Fatima Memorial Hospital recently. The objective of this forum was to identify the various issues faced in managing hepatitis and share the experiences of organizations who are involved in fighting the epidemic. Through this forum it is hoped to formulate a joint strategy to meet the challenges faced.

Mr. Muhammad Aasim Butt – President, Gujranwala Liver Foundation also briefly addressed the meeting. This was followed by a presentation on the burden of Hepatitis in Pakistan. Dr. Omar Chughtai - CEO Chagatai’s Lahore Lab spoke on cost effective diagnostic strategies for HCV and Prof. Husnain Shah – President, Pakistan Society of Hepatology spoke on strategies for prevention and awareness of Hepatitis.

Dr. Munir from the Health Foundation, Karachi gave a talk on Prevention/Awareness Strategies – Ground Reality and Prof. Zahid Yasin Hashmi - Chairman, Liver Foundation Trust, and Faisalabad informed the audience about the activities of the NGO. Mr. Saeed Taj - Executive Member, Gujranwala Liver Foundation spoke about “A working model for hepatitis management” while Mr. Osman Waheed - CEO Ferozsons Pharma, Pakistan shed light on the role of Pharmaceutical Companies in the current scenario of HCV treatment

Speaking on this occasion Dr. Asad Chaudhry Clinical Director - Gujranwala Liver Foundation said, “Hepatitis affects every 10th Pakistani. A lot of NGOs are working towards eradication of Hepatitis in society. Though working towards a common goal their efforts have not created a big impact. It's high time to join hands and deliver a fatal blow to this disease. With the availability of affordable highly effective antiviral drugs in Pakistan this goal seems achievable provided we adopt a successful prevention and awareness strategy.”

Prof. Dr. Arif Amir Nawaz Hospital Director, Fatima Memorial Hospital said, “The objective of creating this forum is to bring all parties to one platform, to share ideas and create avenues for an effective response to combat the disease. Various NGOs have implemented divergent strategies to tackle this problem. The aim of this forum will be to learn from each other’s experiences and implement a cohesive and most effective strategy.”The presentation was followed by lively discussion moderated by Prof. Dr. Arif Amir Nawaz.
