Seminar on Leprosy at Aziz Fatimah Medical & Dental College

Speakers discuss clinical signs, symptoms
and treatment of leprosy

FAISALABAD: The Department of Medical Education, Aziz Fatimah Medical and Dental College Faisalabad organized aseminar on Leprosy on February 4, 2016. Prof. Asghar Butt, Regional Director of CPSP Faisalabad and Prof. Paediatrics at Punjab Medical College was the chief guest on this occasion.  The speakers included Prof. Habib Subhani, Head of the Dept.of Medicine, Dr. Saeed Ahmad, Head of the Dept. of Dermatology and Dr. Farkhanda Jabeen from Dept. of Community Medicine.

Speaking at the occasion Prof.  Asghar Butt appreciated the academic and administrative standards of Aziz Fatimah Medical & Dental College. Keeping in view the academic and administrative skills of Principal, Aziz Fatimah Medical & Dental College, hehoped that itwill soon become one of the best private medical colleges in the country. He promised tosupport launchof post graduate training program in Aziz Fatimah Medical & Dental College and Aziz Fatimah Hospital. College of Physicians and Surgeons of Pakistan (CPSP), he said, will always support and guide medical institutions to fulfil essential requirements for post-graduation program.

Prof. Dr. Habib Subhani in his presentation elaborated the history of Leprosy along with its bad social impact on the lives of patients suffering from Leprosy. He also appreciated the efforts of Dr. Armauer Hansen in diagnosing the disease on scientific basis.

Dr. Saeed Ahmed from the Dept. of Dermatologyclassified the different types of Leprosy along with the clinical signs, symptoms, investigations and treatment modalities. He speciallylaid emphasis on combination drug therapy for treatment to avoid resistance from one drug.

Dr. Farkhanda Jabeen talked about prevalence of Leprosy in Pakistan. She highlighted the services of Dr. Ruth Pfau in controlling, treating, preventing and rehabilitation of patients suffering from Leprosy. She also mentionedabout the efforts of community, NGO’s and the role and duties of social welfares staff in treating Leprosy. Leprosy is not active in most of the areas of Pakistan but we should be vigilant to prevent relapse of this disease, she added.

The presentations were followed by lively discussion wherein the speakers responded to various questions asked by the participants. Later the speakers were presented certificateswhile Principal of AFMDC presented the college souvenirs to the chief guest.

Earlier in his welcome address Principal, Prof Dr. Riaz Hussain Dab highlighted the contributions of Prof. Asghar Butt to academics including medical educaiotnat Punjab Medical College. Prof Dr. Asghar Butt, he further stated, has played an important role in College of Physicians and Surgeons of Pakistan. He hoped that such academic activities will be continued at the institution more frequently in the days to come for the benefit of students and postgraduates. (PR)
