World Cancer Day 2014 celebrated
by AEMC at JPMC, Karachi

KARACHI: To celebrate World Cancer day 2014, Atomic Energy Medical Center (AEMC) Jinnah Postgraduate medical Centre, (JPMC) Karachi, organized a symposium and Poster competition among medical college students of Karachi and Hyderabad region. Theme of the poster competition was “Cancer Prevention is possible”. The event was attended by Nuclear scientist Dr Tariq Suleja, Professor S. H. Manzoor Zaidi Oncologist, Prof Tariq Rafi, Vice Chancellor Sind Medical University, Professor Zahida Memon from Ziauddin Medical University, Dr Mohammad Ali Memmon Director AEMC-JPMC, Mr. Iqbal Panwala, Member Board of Trustees AEMC besides medical students and healthcare providers.

Speaking at the occasion experts talked about cancer prevention and highlighted the measures required to lower the chance of getting cancer. Adopting preventive strategies the number of new cases of cancer in a group or population is reduced.. Cancer they stated is not a single disease but a group of related diseases. Many things in our genes, our lifestyle, and the environment around us may increase or decrease our risk of getting cancer. Speakers explained different ways to help prevent cancer, including the ways to avoid or control things known to cause cancer like change in diet and lifestyle, finding precancerous conditions early. Role of Chemo and radiotherapy in the prevention of cancer was also highlighted which is very effective in the initial stage of the disease.
Dr. Tariq Suleja, Prof Manzoor Zaidi, Dr Mohammad Ali Memon, Prof. Tariq Rafi evaluated the poster for Prizes. Cash prizes were presented to winners sponsored by M/s Sunmark Biotech besides certificates to the participants.
