Indus Neurosciences Conference
by Neuroscience Forum

HYDERABAD: A two-day "Indus Neurosciences Conference” was arranged by the Neuroscience Forum consisting of department of Neurosurgery, Neurology and Psychiatry, Liaquat University of Medical & Health Sciences (LUMHS) Jamshoro on April 2nd and 3rd 2016.It started with a Public Awareness session in Liaquat University Hospital, Hyderabad on March 29th wherein prevention of head & spine injuries were highlighted.

On April 1st a Pre-conference workshop was conducted on "Endoscope Spine Surgery" by the department of Neurosurgery LUMHS, Jamshoro in the Minimal Invasive Surgical Center LUMHS, Jamshoro. Reputed neurosurgeons from all over Pakistan attended the workshop.

Prof. Zafarullah Chaudhary President CPSP was the Chief Guest and Prof. Anjum Habib Vohra was the Guest of Honour of the conference. Prof. Noshad Ahmed Shaikh Vice Chancellor LUMHS, welcomed the guests and participants to the conference.Chairman Department of Neurosurgery LUMHS Professor, Riaz Ahmad Raja, said that this meeting is unique as it has been organized by Neurosciences Forum LUMHS which has been established by the Department of Neurosurgery, Neurology and Psychiatry. The purpose of making this forum was to provide professional development education activities for undergraduates and Post graduates.

Prof. Zafarullah Chaudhary President CPSPin his address said that there was a great need for Neurologists in the country in view of the large number of patients with neurological disorders. CPSP is playing a vital role to produce postgraduate Doctors with quality education and training. He appreciated the efforts initiated by the Liaquat University for providing a platform for the experts from three very important fields of neurosurgery, neurology and psychiatry to discuss their ideas and research together.

Scientific programme consisted of six state of art lectures in the plenary session. First session was chaired by Prof. Junaid Ashraf and the topics which came under discussion included New Trends in the management Brain Tumors by Prof. Athar Enam. This lecture was dedicated to late Prof. Aftab Qureshi, Parkinsonism by Prof. Sarwar Jamil Siddiqui, Medically unexplained symptoms somatization of under link anxiety and depressive disorders by Prof. Iqbal Afridi. This presentation was dedicated to late Prof. Hyder Ali Kazi. Prof. Khalid Mahmood delivered Prof. Iftikhar Raja /Prof. Bashir Ahmad Memorial lecture on DBS for Parkinsonism.

Second session was chaired by Prof. Anjum Habib Vohra and the speakers were Endoscopic end nasal transphenoidal surgery for pituitary adenoma by Prof. Mumtaz Ali, Minimally Invasive Surgery experience at LGH by Prof. Anwar Chaudhry, Stereotactic Palllidotomy for Dystonia’s by Prof. Khalid Mahmood, Neuro interventional radiology by Prof. Tanveer ul Haq and Spinal instability and instrumentation by Prof. Salman Sharif.

Third Session was devoted to Neurosurgery which was chaired by Prof. A. Sattar Hashim. The speakers included Dr. Umair Rashid, Dr. Abid Saleem, Dr. Shahrukh Rizvi, Dr. Ali Afzal and Dr. Mumtaz. Next session was devoted to Neurology while there was a workshop on Mindfulness conducted by Prof. Iqbal Afridi while the other workshop was on Creating Liaison among Neurosciences Experts for better approach to patient care. This was conducted by Dr. Sohail Ahmed.

Childhood Epilepsy, Right Hemisphere, National Guidelines of Epilepsy, Dandy-Walker Malformations, Spontaneous intracereberal hemorrhage and stroke were discussed in the next session by various speakers. Dr. Gohar Jawaid chaired the next session where Neuro Ophthalmology, Zika Virus, early detection of diabetic neuropathy, bilateral sequential optic neuritis, Lateral Mass Screws in Cervical Injury and Craniopharyngioma were discussed.  In the next two sessions the topic which were discussed by various speakers included  Traumatic Extradural Hematoma,  Papilloedema in Neurological Diseases, Effect ofbrain tumour,Cognitive effects of radio surgery,  multiple sclerosis, depression,  significance of electric therapy in treating conversion disorders, psychological distress among  epileptic patients and Self Esteem Deficit in impending suicidal intent among depressed patients.

Free papers session was followed by the Cultural programme organized at the Hyderabad Club. Prof. Riaz Ahmed Raja speaking at the concluding session thanked all those who extended their valuable help and assistance to make the conference a success. (PR)
