World No Tobacco Day meeting
at Hamdard University

KARACHI: Hamdard College of Medicine & Dentistry organized a meeting to celebrate World No Tobacco Day at Hamdard University Auditorium on 28th May 2015. The programme consisted of presentations by eminent healthcare professionals besides Medical and Dental students of the College who presented speeches/skits highlighting the risks of tobacco use and quit smoking.

Professor Muhammad Javed, Dean, Faculty of Health & Medical Sciences of Hamdard University talked about the harms of passive smoking on the mother and child. Professor Dr. Javaid A. Khan, Chairman National Alliance for tobacco control and Professor of Medicine, Aga Khan University, made an interesting presentation on different aspects of tobacco use in Pakistan and highlighted the weaknesses of our system to control the epidemic of tobacco use in Pakistan.

Dr. Sara Salman from WHO (Sindh) who was the Guest of Honour in her speech praised Hamdard University for arranging such important program and offered to collaborate with the University on behalf of WHO in public health related programme. Vice Chancellor of Hamdard University Professor Dr. Hakim Abdul Hannan congratulated Hamdard College of Medicine & Dentistry for holding such an important program for faculty and students of Hamdard University.

Nutrition workshop at SIUT

KARACHI: A specialized Nutritional Support workshop was organized by Nutrition & Dietetics Department of Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT), with main focus on the Parenteral & Enteral Nutrition Support. More than 40 Participants, mostly dietitians attended this workshop including two participants from Peshawar.

Lt. Cdr. Rabia Anwar elaborated the importance and role of dietetics in health care. Afterwards, Clinical Dietician Mrs. Noor Zehra Bilal discussed the importance of Nutritional Assessment in terms of hospital care.  Miss Nusrat Akbar, Consultant Dietician of TIH, presented her lecture on Enteral Nutrition (EN) support along with latest guidelines and how to combat its complications.

Mrs. Kehkashan Zehra Hossain, In charge Clinical Dietitian SIUT talked about on Parenteral Nutrition (PN) support. She explained how to prescribe PN order and discussed its practical considerations. Mr. Ehmar-al-Ibran, Asst. Prof. Burns Centre CHK, discussed comparison of single bottle vs. compounded parenteral nutrition solutions. Ms. Sidra Khan, Manager Pharmacy SIUT discussed the role of pharmacist in developing PN order and electrolyte management.

Hands on activities on Enteral and Parenteral nutrition prescription were conducted by the facilitators: Mrs. Hina Afnan, Consultant Dietitian DUHS, Mrs. Samia Samar, Clinical Dietitian-I SIUT and Ms Tabassum Zehra, Clinical Dietitian SIUT. This was followed by an interactive session, where dietitians shared their clinical experiences.

In second half, two case studies were presented by Ms Sabeen Siddiqui, Sr.Clinical Dietitian SIUT. She discussed the management of these cases, using the latest guidelines of enteral and parenteral nutrition support.

The workshop concluded by a heartening speech by Prof. Adeeb ul Hassan Rizvi Director SIUT, who acknowledged the role of dietetics in Health care and declared dietitians “scientists dealing in food and Nutrition”.(PR)
