 Pakistan GI and Liver Diseases Society meeting

Speakers call for collaborative efforts to
prevent viral hepatitis, other liver diseases

KARACHI: Pakistan GI and Liver Diseases Society (PGLDS), a newly formed body of young gastroenterologists and hepatologists from different public and private healthcare facilities in Karachi organized its first Annual conference on 10th March. 2018 at a local hotel in Karachi. Dr. Shahid Ahmed is the Patron of the Society while Dr. Sajjad Jamil, President and other members includes, Dr. Lubna Kamani Dr. Nazish Butt and Dr. Amanullah Abbassi.

Speaking at the occasion Consultant gastroenterologists and Hepatologists called for utmost dedication and collaborative efforts to eradicate various types of viral Hepatitis, especially Hepatitis B & C which are spreading at an alarming rate in Pakistan and stressed the need for creating awareness about consumption of safe drinking water to prevent common, water-borne diseases including diarrhea, gastroenteritis and typhoid among many others.

Eminent consultant gastroenterologist Prof. Wasim Jafri was the keynote speaker at the conference who spoke on “Steps for the Eradication of Hepatitis by 2030: “Dream or Reality” He stressed on dedication and collaborative efforts in dealing with viral hepatitis and warned that without spreading awareness regarding prevention, target to eradicate viral hepatitis would remain a dream by 2030. Vice Chancellor, (DUHS) Prof. Dr. Saeed Quraishy was the chief guest who talked about steps taken by the Dow University of Health Sciences in training of postgraduate students in various aspects of gastroenterology and liver diseases management. He also informed the participants about steps taken by the Dow University for the provision of best available resources for the training of postgraduate students including state of the art endoscopy and colonoscopy equipment’s, availability of well-equipped surgical theaters and trained and qualified staff for the guidance of young trainees at the DUHS.

Complications of the Portal Hypertension was the topic of discussion by Dr. Hasnain Ali Shah, Dr. Nazish Butt from the JPMC spoke on Hepatocellular Carcinoma, Dr. Nasir Hassan Luck spoke on Fatty Liver and NASH. Nutrition and Liver Disease was the topic addressed by Dr. Jamil Ahmed while Dr. Badar Faiyaz Zuberi spoke on the Oral Treatment of Hepatitis C Virus in Pakistan. The hands on endoscopy workshop session was facilitated by Dr. Nazish Butt, Dr. Lubna Kamani, Dr. Hafeez Ullah Sheikh Dr. Shahid Ahmed and Dr. Sajjad Jamil.

Patron of the PGLDS Dr. Shahid Ahmed pointed out that the objective of forming this society was to promote modern and best available options for the treatment of GI and liver diseases, conduct Continuous Medical Education (CME) sessions and train young house officers and postgraduate trainees on the effective management of GI and liver diseases. Programme also included workshops on ‘Management of H. Pylori’ by Dr. Shahid Rasool, Endoscopic Management of Upper GI Bleed by Dr. Amanullah Abbasi, Pregnancy and Liver Disease by Dr. Lubna Kamani and Lower GI Bleed by Dr. Ashfaq Ahmed. (PR)
